Term
In order to determine a client's threshold, you must have two responses in the ______ direction
Definition
ascending
Term
When administering an air conduction threshold search, when the client responds you decrease the dB by_____and when the client does not respond you increase the dB by______
Definition
10 and 5
Term
Masked bone conduction thresholds are at 15 dB and air conduction thresholds are at 50 dB, the hearing loss is...
Definition
conductive loss
Term
A type B tympanogram with a high ear canal volume may be indicative of...?
Definition
Pressure equalizing tubes or perforated ear drum
Term
A type B tympanogram with normal Ear Canal Volume may indicate what?
Definition
fluid
Term
measure of contraction of the stapedius and tensor tympani muscles
Definition
acoustic reflex
Term
easures the sound reflected from the ear drum while the pressure of the external canal is varied by the operator. It aids in the assessment of outer ear, middle ear and the Eustachian tube. This test should not be performed in infants below the age of 7 months because the suppleness of the cartilage of the external canal may produce misleading results.
Definition
Tympanometry
Term
Name two things that may cause a Type B tympanogram
Definition
perforated ear drum or PE tubes, middle ear fluid
Term
Normal ear canal volume and no peak pressure or compliance may indicate
Definition
fluid in the ear
Term
Name and explain the 5 types of tympanograms
Definition

What is Type A (normal)

Type AS (abnormal) peak at 0, no amplitude, low compliance, scaring or growth

Type AD (abnormal) high compliance, break in chain, head injury

Type B (abnormal) High volume Normal volume

Type C (abnormal) everything normal but pressure, infections, allergies, eustacian tube

Term
SRT should be in agreement with the _______ within _____dB HL.
Definition
PTA 10
Term
Characteristics of a conductive hearing loss
Definition
Usually temporary Can usually be treated medically or surgically Simply reduces the volume of signal Maximum loss of 60 dB
Term
What are the 3 main components of the ABR
Definition
waves I III V
Term
Characteristics of a sensorineural hearing loss
Definition
Usually permanent Usually cannot be treated medically or surgically Reduces volume of signal AND reduces clarity of signal (i.e., reduced frequency resolution) Can range from mild to profound
Term
Explain/describe conditioned play audiometry
Definition
Testing can usually be conducted under headphones or with inserts for ear specific information. I usually tell them they are going to look like a bug/butterfly or wear a special hat. Testing is transformed into a game for the child with the use of various methods (throwing a block into a bucket, slapping your hand, touching their nose, etc. Must keep the game very simple and not complicated!!!! Children that can be conditioned to the task can provide us with a complete audiometric picture in most cases.
