Term

moxifloxacin

Definition

Indication: treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis

MOA: a member of the fluoroquinolone class of anti-infective drugs

Term
bevacizumab
Definition

Indication: Avastin is indicated for the first- or second-line treatment of patients with metastaticcarcinoma of the colon or rectum in combination with intravenous 5-fluorouracil–based chemotherapy.

MOA: Bevacizumab binds VEGF and prevents the interaction of VEGF to its receptors (Flt-1 and KDR) on the surface of endothelial cells. The interaction of VEGF with its receptors leads to endothelial cell proliferation and new blood vessel formation in in vitro models of angiogenesis.

Term
naphazoline
Definition
Indication: Ocular redness and itching
MOA:stimulates alpha adrenergic receptors, reducing ocular congestion and redness (sympathomimetic)
Term
cephalexin
Definition
Indications: used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria.
MOA:bactericidal; inhibits cell wall mucopeptide synthesis
Term
naproxen
Definition
Indications: For the relief of the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis
For the relief of the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis
For the relief of the signs and symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis
For the relief of the signs and symptoms of juvenile arthritis
For relief of the signs and symptoms of tendonitis
For relief of the signs and symptoms of bursitis
For relief of the signs and symptoms of acute gout
For the management of pain
For the management of primary dysmenorrhea
MOA: is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with analgesic andantipyretic properties.
The mechanism of action of the naproxen anion, like that of other NS AIDs, is not completely understood but may be related to prostaglandin synthetase inhibition.
exact mechanism of action unknown; inhibits cyclooxygenase, reducing prostaglandin and thromboxane synthesis
Term
norgestimate-ethinyl-estradiol
Definition
Indication:prevention of pregnancy in women who elect to use oral contraceptives as a method of contraception.
MOA:suppresses LH and FSH, inhibiting ovulation; alters cervical mucus and endometrium
--- Othro-Tri-Cyclen
Term
polymyxin-B-bacitracin
Definition
Indications: for the topical treatment of superficial infections of the external eye and its adnexa caused by susceptible bacteria. Such infections encompass conjunctivitis, keratitis and keratoconjunctivitis, blepharitis and blepharoconjunctivitis.
MOA:Bacitracin is bactericidal for a variety of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. It interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis by inhibition of the regeneration of phospholipid receptors involved in peptidoglycan synthesis.
- _________ is bactericidal for a variety of gram-negative organisms. It increases the permeability of the bacterial cell membrane by interacting with the phospholipid components of the membrane.
Term
propranolol
Definition
Indications: the management of hypertension.
Sympatholytics are used to treat hypertension, anxiety and panic
MOA:- non-selectively antagonizes beta-1 and beta-2 adrenergic receptors
- is a non-selective beta blocker, that is, it blocks the action of epinephrine and norepinephrine on both β1- and β2-adrenergic receptors.
Term
acyclovir
Definition
Indications: Herpes Zoster Infection, Genital Herpes, Chickenpox/varicella
MOA: inhibits DNA polymerase; incorporates into viral DNA
Term
methotrexate
Definition
Indications: Psoriasis
Arthritis, rheumatoid
MOA:immunosuppressant: inhibits dihydrofolate reductase; inhibits lymphocyte proliferation (folate antagonist)
- Methotrexate is an antimetabolite of the folic acid analog type. Methotrexate is cell cycle–specific for the S phase of cell division. Activity is due to inhibition of DNA, RNA, thymidylate, and protein synthesis as a result of relatively irreversible binding with dihydrofolate reductase, which prevents reduction of dihydrofolate to the active tetrahydrofolate. Growth of rapidly proliferating cells (epithelial cells in psoriasis, bone marrow, fetal cells, buccal and intestinal mucosa, cells of the urinary bladder, spermatogonia) is affected more than growth of most normal tissues and skin.
