Term
Feather

a collective term for diamond cleavages and fractures
Term
Fracture Filling
Definition
treatment that involves injecting a molten glass substance into a diamond's surface-reaching feathers or laser drill-holes
Term
Laser Drilling
Definition
treatment that involves using a concentrated beam of laser light to reach a diamond's dark inclusions and to disguise or eliminate them
Term
Loupe
Definition
a small, portable magnifying lens used for examining gemstones
Term
Loupe Clean
Definition
term that describes a diamond that might have surface blemishes, but shows no inclusions under 10X magnification
Term
Manufacturer
Definition
an individual or company that cuts and polishes diamonds and colored stones
Term
Pique
Definition
a general term for included stones
Term
Plot
Definition
a color-keyed diagram of a gemstone's significant clarity characteristics
Term
Bearded Girdle (BG)
Definition

very small feathers that extend from the girdle surface into the stone; can result from the cutting process

Term
Bruise (Br)
Definition

a tiny area of impact accompanied by very small, root-like feathers; typically occurs at a facet junction

Term
Cavity (Cv)
Definition

an angular opening created when part of a feather breaks away

Term
Chip (Ch)
Definition

a shallow opening that occurs at a girdle edge, facet junction or culet; caused by damage to the stone's surface

Term
Cloud (Cd)
Definition

many tightly grouped pinpoints that might be too small to distinguish individually but together have a hazy appearance

Term
Feather (Ftr)
Definition

general trade term for a break in a gemstone, often white and feathery in appearance

Term
Grain Center (GrCnt)
Definition

a small, concentrated area of crystal distortion; can be white or dark and might have a thread-like or pinpoint-like appearance

Term
Crystal (Xtl)
Definition

a mineral crystal contained in a diamond

Term
Indented Natural (IndN)
Definition

a portion of the rough's original surface that dips below a polished diamond's surface, or an opening left when a surface-reaching crystal drops out

Term
Internal Graining (IntGr)
Definition

lines, angles, or curves that might appear whitish, colored, or reflective, or affect transparency at 10X; caused by irregularities in crystal growth

Term
Internal Laser Drilling (ILD)
Definition

laser drilling within a diamond that doesn't reach the surface

Term
Knot (K)
Definition

a transparent included diamond crystal that extends to the surface after fashioning

Term
Laser Drill-Hole (LDH)
Definition

a tiny, surface-reaching tunnel produced by a laser light beam

Term
Needle (Ndl)
Definition

a thin, elongated crystal that looks like a tiny rod at 10X

Term
Pinpoint (Pp)
Definition

a very small crystal that looks like a tiny dot at 10X

Term
Twinning Wisp (W)
Definition

a series of pinpoints, clouds or crystals that forms in a diamonds growth plane; associated with crystal distortion and twinning planes

Term
Abrasion (Abr)
Definition

a series of minute nicks along the facet junctions of a fashioned diamond; gives the edges a white or fuzzy appearance

Term
Extra Facet (EF)
Definition

a facet that's not required by the cutting style, placed without regard for the diamond's symmetry; most often found near the girdle

Term
Lizard Skin
Definition

wavy or bumpy area on the surface of a polished diamond

Term
Natural (N)
Definition

a portion of the original surface of a rough diamond left on a fashioned stone; usually on or near the girdle

Term
Nick (Nk)
Definition

a small notch on a facet junction with no readily apparent depth at 10X, usually along the girdle edge or at the culet

Term
Pit (Pit)
Definition

a small opening that looks like a tiny white dot

Term
Polish Lines (PL)
Definition

fine parallel grooves and ridges left by polishing; can occur on any facet but do not cross facet junctions; transparent or white

Term
Burn Mark (Brn)
Definition

hazy surface area that results from excessive heat or from uneven polishing caused by structural irregularities; also called polish mark or burned facet

Term
Rough Girdle (RG)
Definition

irregular or granular girdle surface

Term
Scratch (S)
Definition

a thin, dull white line across the diamond's surface; shows no apparent depth at 10X

Term
Surface Graining (SGr)
Definition

similar to internal graining, except it appears on the surface; results from irregularities in the crystal structure

Term
GIA Clarity Scale
Definition
a scale for grading clarity including eleven diamond clarity grades; the scale narrows at the top because there are very few diamonds in the higher clarity grades
Term
Flawless
Definition

diamonds which show no inclusions or blemishes or any kind when examined under 10X by a skilled grader

a flawless diamond can have these clarity characteristics:

  • extra facets not visible in the face-up view
  • naturals confined entirely to the girdle, as long as they don't thicken the girdle or distort its outline
  • internal graining that not reflective, white, or colored, and that doesn't significantly affect transparency
  • inscriptions that don't appear to penetrate the surface when viewed at 10X
Term
Internally Flawless (IF)
Definition

diamonds which show no inclusions but do have some minor blemishes when examined using 10X magnification by a skilled grader

blemishes are typically surface grain lines, naturals and extra facets

Term
Very Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2)
Definition

diamonds which contain minute inclusions that are difficult even for experienced graders to see under 10X magnficiation

VVS1- extremely difficult to see

VVS2 - very difficult to see

inclusions are typically pinpoints, tiny feathers, internal grading, a bearded girdle or tiny cavities

Term
Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2)
Definition

diamonds which contain small or minor inclusions observed with effort under 10X magnification

inclusions are typically small crystals, clouds, or feathers

Term
Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2)
Definition

diamonds which contain inclusions that are noticeable to an experienced grader under 10X magnification

inclusions are typically clouds, included crystals, knots, cavities and feathers

Term
Included (I1, I2, and I3)
Definition

diamonds which contain inclusions that are obvious under 10X magnification

Inclusions are typically large feathers or large included crystal and they may affect the transparency and brilliance of the stone
