Term
Diabetes Mellitus
Definition
Inadequate insulin activity, due to either inadequate production of insulin or to decreased responsivness of body cells to insulin.
Term
What does Insulin do?
Definition

dominant hormone when blood glucose level is high. Stores energy- binding to receptor sites , changing the permeability of the membrane such that glucose enters the cell more readily.

"Transports Glucose"

Term
What does glucagon do?
Definition
  • Dominate hormone when blood glucose is low
  • produces energy
  • acts on liver to increase glycogenolysis ( conversion of glycogen into glucose)
  • in extreme cases= Gluconeogenesis ( break down of protein and fat into glucose)
Term
Glycogenolysis
Definition
the breakdown of glycogen to glucose
Term
Gluconeogenesis
Definition
Conversion of protein and fat to form glucose
Term
What does Alpha, Beta and delta cells of the pancreas do?
Definition
  • Alpha: Produces glucogon
  • Beta: produces Insulin
  • Delta: Somastatin ( inhibits glucogon and insulin)
Term
Ketone Bodies
Definition
Compounds produced during the catabolism of fatty acids, including acetoacetic acid, B-hydroxybuyric acid and acetone.
Term
Ketosis
Definition
the presense of significant quantities of ketone bodies in the blood
Term
What is Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus ( IDDM)?
Definition
  • very low production of insulin by the pancreas
  • require insulin injections
  • heredity is a factor for determining who will be predisposed to type 1
Term
What is Type 2 Diabetes (NIDDM)?
Definition
  • moderate devline in insulin production
  • increased weight (increased size of fat cells) causes a relative deficiency in the number of insulin receptors per cell, making fat less responsive to insulin
  • more common
Term

What is the emergency?
Signs and symtoms:

  • Polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia
  • warm, dry skin
  • N/V
  • Kussmauls resps
  • fruity odor on breath
  • tachycardia
Definition
Diabetic Ketoacidosis
Term
Explain Diabetic Ketoacidosis ( Diabetic Coma)
Definition
  • complication of type 1 diabetes
  • profound insulin deficiency with increased glucagon activity
  • body uses gluconeogensis- creates ketones
  • changing the Ph to more acidic
