-Behaviour is controlled by forces that are beyond the individual's control

What is biological determinism?
Definition
-behaviour is determined by biological factors such as instinctive needs (eg eating/drinking/sleeping), the controlling role of parts of the brain (eg speech production in Broca's area), hormone system, evolutionary forces (eg flight/fight responses) and genes.

-mental activity and behaviour are a result of unconscious mental processes (based on Freudian theory)

Definition
-Behaviour is under the control of environmental stimuli and external forces of reward and punishment. Eg influence of society, culture, family.

-fits with psychology as a science (general laws)
-leads to applications from the general laws eg token economy for offenders, drug therapy for OCD sufferers
