Insight to Twilight:

Twilight is a modern film, based in modern day (early 21st century). It is a film based on the books by Stephanie Mayer, about a lovestory between a vampire and an ordinary schoolgirl.

Definition

Target Audience:

As Twilight is a fairly recent film and one that most teenagers and young adults have seen, we decided to make them our target audience. This easily enabled us to pull jokes and use humour that they would relate to.

Style:

  The style of our piece was a farce, otherwise known as a

slap-stick comedy, and this allowed us to completely mock the film and create new and inventive interpretations of the film.

Genre:

The genre of our piece was a comedy, as it was a farce and included comical jokes that would entertain the audience.

Performance Space: 

We used a minimalistic stage to make the audience focus on the acting rather than the stage set and design, and by using a  minimalistic stage with curtains surrounding it (proscenium stage), it allowed us to be able to hide our props behind it - which lead to smoother transitions between scenes.

Technical and Design Elements:

We used a variety of lighting sequences in our performance, including cold washes and green tinting, which allowed us to create a mood for the audience to follow. We also used music from the film so that the audience could link with particular events in the film throughout our farce.

My Role:

My contribution to the performace was acting. My main character was Bella (who was a leading role) and I also

multi-roled as Victoria. As well as acting, I wrote some of the scenes for our piece by myself and also with the rest of my peers.

Voice:

To fit in with the modern American-Varsity theme of our piece, I put on an American accent. As well as making the piece more realistic, it also added comical value to the piece as it was a purposely bad attempt at an American accent. I also used long pauses throughtout to create suspense of tension, which made the audience focus on my character when necessary.

Tone of Voice:

I also kept to one tone of voice throughout the performance, which was low-pitched and monotone. By doing so, the audience found it amusing because it contrasted greatly from the character in the film. It also highlighted my characters personality, which was dull and boring.

Facial expressions:

 With my facial expressions, I used a very limited selection when Bella such as; blank face (where all of my muscles were relaxed and I showed no sign of emotion), and a confused face (where my eyebrows were raised and my mouth slightly open.) With such a limited array of facial expressions, it created the look that my character was dull and emotionless.

Movement:

My movement whilst on stage was like my facial expressions, very limited (when playing Bella)I used a slow pace of walk, and used over-exaggerated movements which highlighted my character's personality. However, when I played Victoria my movements were more exaggerated and faster. This contrast in movements easily portrayed that I played two different characters.

Throughout the process of creating our farce, the group noticed that I had became more confident performing in front of them and even our class. I noticed this change too, and this allowed me to put on a better performance when it came to finally showing our farce.

I also learnt new skills when creating "Twilight" such as  multi-roling and being able to create foreign accents, which I performed well on the performance day.

 When rehearsing in the drama studio (using our minimalistic stage; which consisted of proscenium staging where the audience faced us end-on) I noticed tat I kept to the back of the stage, rather than the front. Therefore, in the rehearsals, I used the available space and positioned myself downstage rather than upstage. This allowed me to be able to interact with the audience more, and for them to focus on my character.

I also noticed in our rehearsals that there was a significant room for improvement when it came to transitions between scenes and using props. I decided that by using a blackout, it allowed for smoother transitions and also more time for the group and I to be able to change props and even costume. This added a great effect to our performance as it made the piece run more smoothly and in turn, made the performance look professional.

At the beginning of the rehearsals, I played Bella using an English accent. I then decided that using an American accent worked better because it fitted in with the American-Varsity theme of the farce. This was a good example of serendipity in our rehearsal process.

I believe that our farce performance of "Twilight" was very successful. I think that our performance fitted in well with our task aim, which was to produce a 15 minute farce of a film and use a large variety of dramatic skills to create comical scenes.

By using props in our performance, it allowed us to create more characters in our farce between 4 people (the use of wigs allowed 2 characters to become 7 over a short period of time.) It also allowed us to be more inventive with the scenes that the film provided, and allowed us to expand on them and make them humourous.

I think that I did well with writing parts of the script, with my peers and also alone. I think that by using my imagination, it allowed us to add absurd and weird features to our piece, as well with originality and comical values.

 I also think that my use of newly learnt skills such as

multi-roling and accents allowed me to use more dramatic effects throughout our performance, and in turn made the piece humourous. My use of a badly-staged American accent allowed for us base some of the comical jokes around it, and my use of multi-roling also added humour. For example, when I walked offstage as Bella and walked back on as Victoria, the pause between my entrance as Victoria was prolonged and exaggerated, which created suspense and also humour, as the other characters on stage had to wait around for me to come back on stage.
