CENTER LINE – Line running down middle of the stage separating stage left from stage right. Measurements are made from plaster line and center line. CURTAIN LINE – The line on the stage where the act curtain falls. Used as measurement point for up and down stage like the plaster line. Not as accurate as the plaster line due to curtain fullness variance. GROUND PLAN – An aerial view of the stage drawn to a specific scale showing all the pertinent elements of the stage. Usually one-quarter inch equals one foot or one-half inch equals one foot. SECTION – A side view of the stage, drawn to scale, drawn through the center line of the theatre. Usually used to show relative trim heights of flown pieces. FLY LOFT – The space directly above the stage where draperies and lighting instruments are hung. Ideally, the height of the fly loft is three times as high as the proscenium arch. GRID – The metal framework at the top of the fly loft just below the stage roof. Everything that flies is suspended from the grid. FLY SYSTEM – A series of cables, pulleys and counterweights that enable scenery drapes, or lighting equipment to fly in and out.

BATTEN – A metal pipe attached to the cables of the fly system on which all scenery and lighting equipment is tied or clamped. MASKING – Any drapery or scenic piece used to define the stage or hide the view of the audience. BORDER or TEASER – A horizontal masking piece used to hid anything in the fly loft such as lighting equipment and scenery. LEG – A vertical masking piece hung at the sides of the stage used to hide the wing spaces. The first (downstage) leg is called the torm or tormentor and is the visual determiner of the width of the stage. WING – The offstage space between the legs. GRAND DRAPE – The first downstage border often called a teaser. It is the visual determiner of the height of the proscenium opening. Not opened or closed. HOUSE (ACT) CURTAIN – The curtain that opens and closes separating the audience from the stage. Hung directly upstage of the Grand Drape CYCLORAMA – Large fabric drop rigged at the back of the stage and wrapping downstage in the wing space. Used to give feeling of depth. SKY DROP – Fabric drop at the back of the stage used for sky effects without wrapping downstage like a cyclorama. BOOM – Vertical pipe used for mounting instruments. On stage booms are usually portable. Portable types are referred to as trees, towers and ladders. BEAM SLOT – A false beam mounted in the ceiling of an auditorium used for a mounting position F.O.H. – Front of House A.P. – Ante-Pro. Any mounting position in the auditorium
