Definition
Lagoon-an area of shallow water separated from the sea by low sandy dunes.
Has a heavy mixture of water and soil sediment which causes it to be very organic and thick.

Definition

Alluvial Fan- When deposits are formed where a smooth flowing stream slows and spreads near the exit of a canyon, usually towards a flat plain.  Sediments include silt and clay and larger particles of sand and gravel.

Tidal Flats-tideland that is flat or nearly flat and often muddy or marshy
b. Same as a lagoon. Since they are both near water, the sediments are very thick and rich in nutrients.

Definition
Fluvial Environment- An environment that revolves around running water. Usually in the form of streams or rivers.  Sediments include conglomerates and breccia fragments.

Definition
Reef- a ridge of rocks or sand, often of coral debris, at or near the surface of the water.
b. The sediments are filled with carbon and are considered carbonate.

Definition

Lacustrine Environments- Wetlands that include a damned river channel, lack trees and shrubs, and contain bedrock shore features.  Sediments include that of immature organic compositions.

Definition
Continental Shelf-the part of a continent that is submerged in relatively shallow sea.
b. Sediments usually become increasingly fine with distance from the coast.

Definition
Continental Slope and Rise- a steep slope separating a continental shelf and a deep ocean basin.
b. Sediment does not come from land, but it is produced at sea in the water column. It is also made from carbon.

Deserts- Areas, composed of mostly sand, that receive typically less than 10 inches of precipitation per year.  Organic Minerals are not commonly seen in deserts.  Consist of both coarse and fine grained minerals.

Definition
Abyssal Plain-a large area of extremely flat or gently sloping ocean floor just offshore from a continent.
b. Sediment is very coarse.

Swamps- Shallow wetlands that include aquatic vegetation and extremely soft soil/damp soil.  Consists of many organic minerals including phosphorous.

Definition
Beach-an expanse of sand or pebbles along a shore.
b. Most of the sediments from beaches get washed into the beach from land areas. Alot of sand is here and this is where a mojority of sand comes from.

Deltas- Created at the mouth of a river made of the deposition of sediments carried throughout the river.  Composed mostly of sand.  Nutrients are commonly found here.
