teaching evolution in the public school system because it disagrees with the Bible. Furthermore, how
can atheist swear an oath in court or be elected into Congress.

Why will separation of mosque and state be difficult to achieve in Iraq:
Definition
Islam is a central part of their culture and in order to have separation it would need to be taken out of

Berber speakers tend to be scattered and located in the mountains. They have no centralized authority
so no one can really enforce Arabization. The Berber’s are a very proud minority group and have zero
motivation to become Arabized. Furthermore, they think of themselves as superior and look at arabs as
“hillbillies”. The Berbers have no standardized language so it would be nearly impossible to teach them
Arabic.

Comment briefly on the reasons for the prolonged dispute between Sunni and Shi’ite Muslims:
Definition
Both follow the Koran as direct word of God and that Muhammad is his prophet. They both hold high
regard to the holy site of Mecca and pray in that direction. However, the difference lies in who would
succeed Muhammad after his death. The Shi’ites thought the prophet’s son-in-law and cousin should
lead as caliph whereas the Sunnis believed it should be one of his first converts Abu Bakr. Shi’ite Islam is
far more hierarchical than Sunni Islam. Shi’ites are a majority in Iraq and Iran but a minority in the Islam
faith in total.
Term
Diagram about cultural frontiers:
Definition
(first diagram) A’s are Spanish that came to America for God, Gold, and Glory. Not to try and settle and
remove Indians. Therefore, when some did settle there was a lot of intermingle between the two groups
creating a/b. Also, in this case the A’s were numerically inferior however, superior in the fact that they
had much greater technology so were able to oppress the Bs.
(second diagram) A’s are the settlers that settled present day US. They came here to settle so they
pushed the B’s off the land or killed them off. Eventually, what survivors were left were put into
reservations. Very little intermingling.

Why there can’t be democracy in countries with Arabic speech and Islam
Definition
In order to have democracy the situation must be secular and civilian. These 18 countries are either
ruled by a monarchy, a dictatorship, the military, or a non-secular Islamic rule. Also, these countries
tend to be anti-western in their beliefs and the thought of adopting democracy is looked down upon
as almost blasphemy. Furthermore, Islamic fundamentalist movements completely halt any movement
towards democracy.
Term
Kurdistan as both cultural-geographic reality and a political-geographic impossibility?
Definition
Kurdistan is a cultural geographic reality because it is a uniform culture mainly concentrated on the
borders of Turkey, Iraq, and Iran. However, it is a political-geographic impossibility because it would
require all three states to relinquish territory, which is highly unlikely because these states do not get
along very well.
