Term
What is Boyles Law?
Definition
For a given amount of air, pressure DECREASES as volume increases.

And pressure INCREASES as volume decreases.
Term
what is compression?
Definition
As tines of fork move out from original position, they push air molecules together, forming areas of high pressure
Term
What is rarefaction?
Definition
As tines swing and move back, they allow molecules to move back (and even overshoot their original positions) and this forms less dense areas
Term
What is elasticity?
Definition
Elasticity is the force that makes an object go back to it's original state. (example = air molecules disturbed by tuning fork)
Term
What is inertia?
Definition
Inertia is the property of objects to stay at rest or continue moving once started.
example = air molecules overshooting original resting place
Term
Explain Pure Tone & Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM)
Definition
SHM = smooth, regular, back and forth vibration of an object

this motion produces a sound wave that is a pure tone. (which is periodic motion)
Term
What is an aperiodic wave?
Definition
Each cycle takes different amounts of time.
sounds like noise or cch! or Ssh!
Term
What is a periodic wave?
Definition
Each cycle takes same amount of time.

sounds like music or vowel sounds.
Term
What is a complex sound?
Definition
they are products of complex waves, consisting of two or more frequencies.
Term
Complex Periodic Sounds
Definition
Consist of a fundamental frequency and whole number multiples of it, called HARMONICS.
Term
Complex Aperiodic Sounds
Definition
These are sounds consisting of 2 or more frequencies, NOT RELATED TO EACH OTHER.

These sound like noise.
Term
Frequency is affected by what 3 things?
Definition
LENGTH
-longer objects vibrate more slowly

MASS
-more massive, the more slowly it vibrates

TENSION/STIFFNESS
-more tense or siff objects vibrate more quickly
