Term
What is digital convergence?
Definition
gradual merger of computing and communications into a new information environment in which the same info is exchanged among many kinds of equipment using computer language.
Term
what is the different between analog and digital data?
Definition
Analog signals use wave variations (sound, light, temperature.
Digital signals are used by computers, a series of 0's and 1's.
Term
What is a modem?
Definition
short for modulate/demodulate. they convert a computer's digital data, transmits it, then reconverts it back to digital data for the receiving computer.
Term
What is digital sampling?
Definition
Converting reality to digital form: digital recording devices take samples of the sound wave at very fast regular intervals which are played back to fast that they sound continuous.
Term
What is a network? What are its advantages/disadvantages?
Definition
a system of interconnected computers/other devices that communicate. benefits: share programs and data, better communications, security of info. access to shared databases. Disadvantages: expense, security issues, rapid speard of virsus, dependency on mail file server
Term
What are the 5 types of networks?
Definition
WAN (Wide area network), MAN (metropolitan area net.) LAN (Local area net., HAN (home area/automation net.) PAN (personal area net.)
Term
What is a client/server network structure?
Definition
consists of clients (computers that request data) and servers (computers that supply data)
Term
What is the peer-to-peer network structure?
Definition
all computers on the network are "equal" and communicate directly with one another without relying on servers.
Term
Name the wired connections.
Definition
twisted pair, coaxial cable, fiber-optic cables, ethernet
Term
Name the wireless connections.
Definition
infrared, radio, communications stellites, GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, 3/4 G
Term
What is a packet?
Definition
fixed length blocks of data for transmission, reassembled after transmission
Term
What is protocol?
Definition
set of conventions, rules, governing the exchange of data between hardward/ software components in the network
Term
What is narrow band?
Definition
used for regular phone communications
Term
What is broadband?
Definition
for high speed audio and video, wide band frequencies. (faster than narrowband)
Term
What is TC/IP?
Definition
protocol for getting wired devices connected to internet.
Term
What is WAP?
Definition
wireless application protocol. wireless devices use this to connect to internet.
Term
What are the 5 types of wireless communications media?
Definition
infrered transmission, broadcast radio, cellular radio, microwave radio, communication satellites.
Term
What is the history of the internet?
Definition
began in 1969 for dept. of defense. some other stuff happened. 2010: 2 billion people use it
Term
What do you need to connect to the internet?
Definition
access device (computer with modem), means of connection (phone line, cable, wireless) and internet access provider.
Term
What is bandwidth?
Definition
how much data can be sent through a communications channel in a given amount of time
Term
What is a DSL line?
Definition
uses regular phone lines- need to be no more than 3 miles from phone company switching office.
Term
What is a T1 line?
Definition
traditional trunk line. very expensive
Term
What is a cable modem?
Definition
tv cable system with internet connecion
Term
What is satellite wifi?
Definition
transmits data between satellite dish and satellite orbiting earth.
Term
What is wifi?
Definition
wireless fidelity. has 4 generations.
Term
What is ISP?
Definition
Internet service provider. ex. Earthlink, Comcast
Term
What is WISP?
Definition
Wireless internet service provider. ex. AT&T, Cingular, Verizon.
Term
How does the internet work?
Definition
hundreds of thousands of smaller networks. has Point of presence (collection of modems), local gateway to an ISP's network. ISP connects to an IXP.
Term
What is an IXP?
Definition
routing computer at a point on the internet where several connections come together. run by private companies.
Term
What is the internet backbone?
Definition
high speed, high capacity data transmission lines, usually fiberoptic. uses newest technology
Term
What is the Internet 2?
Definition
Cooperative university/business education and research project. adds "toll lanes" to older internet to speed things up.advances videoconferencing, research, collaberation
Term
What is an IP address?
Definition
uniquely indentifies any device connected to internet. four sets of numbers between 0-255 seperated by periods .
Term
What are browsers?
Definition
software for web surfing (internet explorer, firefox.)
Term

Definition
URL: character string that points to a specific piece of info anywhere on the web. consists of:
web protocol: http://
domain name of web server
directory name/folder
file within directory, extension
Term
