either single-case approach (study of one country using inductive reasoning, something true for one case then it's prob. true for all similar cases) or comparative approach (deductive reasoning, study of many countries, something is true for many countries than it must be true for a country w/ similar characteristics, much stronger reasoning but harder to really give enough study to each country)
Problems: diff. to control variables, limited # of similar caes, selection bias, endogeneity ("motor of history" what is cause and what is effect)
