| Sympathomimetic Definition |
|
Definition
Producing physiological effects resembling those caused by the activity or stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system
Examples include catecholamines, epinephrine (adrenaline), norepinephrine (noradrenaline), dopamine, etc.
These drugs act at the postganglionic sympathetic terminal, either directly activating postsynaptic receptors, blocking breakdown and reuptake, or stimulating production and release of catecholamines.

|
Definition
|
Anticholinergics blocks the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the central and the peripheral nervous system.
They inhibit parasympathetic nerve impulses by selectively blocking the binding of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine to its receptor in nerve cells.
Anticholinergics are divided into three categories: antimuscarinic agents, ganglionic blockers, and neuromuscular blockers. |

|
Term

Definition
Affect the muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. The majority of anticholinergic drugs are antimuscarinics.
Ex: Atropine, Diphenhydramie, Ipratropium

Antinicotinic agents affect the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. The majority of these are non-depolarizing skeletal muscle relaxants for surgical use that are structurally related to curare. Several are depolarizing agents.
Ex:Tubocurarine, Hexamethonium, Dextromethorphan
