Term
What do color management systems do?
Definition
- assign specific color meaning to RGB and CMYK values
- change RGB and CMYK values into numbers that can be sent to our various devices to keep colors consistent
Term
Profile Connections Space (PCS)
Definition
gives color an unambiguous numerical value in CIE LAB that is device independent and reads the way that we see color providing a link between input and output
Term
Color Profiles
Definition
describe the relationship between RGB and CMYK control signals and the colors those signals produce as well as defining LAB values that correspond to a given set of RGB or CMYK numbers
Term
Color Management Module (CMM)
Definition
color engine oversees RGB or CMYK conversions by working with color contained in the profile
Term
Rendering Intents
Definition
Used to fix out of gamut colors by compressing the source gamut while preserving color relationships
Term
What are the 4 Rendering Intents?
Definition
Perceptual
Relative
Absolute
Saturation
Term
Absolute Rendering Intent
Definition
Used mostly for proofing, makes the whites a light bluish color to preserve the over all look on a yellowish paper
Term
Perceptual Rendering Intent
Definition
tries to preserve all colors by desaturating the colors in the source space so that they fit into the destination space while preserving overall color relationships. works best with a significant amount of out of gamut colors
Term
Relative Rendering Intent
Definition
sets the white point to be the paper being printed on and clips out of gamut colors to the closest color that can be produced which preserves more of the original color
Term
Saturation
Definition
not concerned with accuracy so much as it is concerned with preserving vivid colors from source to destination. good for business graphics
Term
Which is better -- Assigning a profile or Embedding a profile? Why?
Definition
Embedding a profile because it doesn't change the values in the image but instead tells the Color Management System how the color values need to be represented. This will stay the same from one device to the next and will open automatically.
Term
If the color spaced is changed, will the image change? Why?
Definition
Yes! If the color space is changed the way the image looks will change because you are selecting a different way to view the image. However, the RGB values will not change. They are just being viewed in a different way by the color space.
Term
What to CIE LAB and CIE XYZ represent?
Definition
PERCEIVED color, how a person will see it
Term
What would happen if there were no profiles?
Definition
There would be NO communication between devices
Term
Which is larger? Table Data or Matrix Data?
Definition
Table Data
Term
What is the largest color profile?
Definition
Adobe RGB because it has table data for the rendering intents
Term
What information does a device profile contain?
Definition
Gamut
Dynamic Range
Tone Reproduction Characteristics of the Colorants
Term
Stimulus
Definition
a method for calibration and profiling that sends a target of known color signals to a device to calibrate or profile
Term
Response
Definition
a method for calibration and profiling that measures the color signals sent from the stimulus
Term
Calibration
Definition
changing a devices behavior to receive a desired state so the device remains consistent and accurate results are achieved consistently
Term
Profiling
Definition
the process by which we RECORD a devices behavior. DOES NOT ALTER A DEVICES BEHAVIOR
Term
What are 3 variables that need to be controlled during Calibration and Profiling?
Definition
1. Software settings - turn off all auto functions
2. Media (i.e. ink and paper) need to be consistent to attain consistent results
3. Hardware settings (i.e. monitor)- don't change brightness and contrast because the color will shift
Term
Linearization
Definition
making sure printer nozzles are aligned
Term
What is a one way profile?
Definition
a camera or scanner, only sends profile into destination
Term
What is a 2 way profile?
Definition
a monitor or printer, sends profiles back and forth to convert colors and color spaces
