Definition
A subject is the noun or pronoun that takes action in a sentence.
Ex. I bought my dog a collar.
"I" is the word in the sentence that takes action.

Definition
A predacate is a fancy word for a verb.
Ex. I bought my dog a collar.
"bought" is the predicate.

Definition
A direct object is what is acted upon or the "what".
Ex. I bought my dog a collar.
I bought my dog what? A collar.

Definition
An indirect object is the word that is acted to or for. You could ask the question for whom to find the indirect object.
Ex. I bought my dog a collar.
I bought a collar for whom? My dog.

Definition
A prepositional phrase is a group of words that begins with a preposition and concludes with it's object.
Ex. I bought my dog a collar at the store.
(at the store) is the prep. phrase. At is the preposition and store is the object.

A subordinate clause is a clause that cannot stand alone.

A clause that can stand by itself and expresses a complete thought.

Clauses that modify verbs, adverbs or adjectives.
Ex. She ate greedily as if she was famished.
(as if she was famished) is the clause and it describes how greedily.

Definition
An adjective phrase modifies nouns or pronouns.
Ex. The boy who took my shoe is a jerk.
(who took my shoe) is describing which boy.

Definition
A noun clause is a clause that takes the place of a noun or pronoun. They can function as Direct Objects, Indirect Objects, Objects of the Preposition, Subjects, Predicate Nominatives and Predicate Adjectives.
Ex. Whoever I see today will be lovely.
(whoever I see today) could be replaced with a single noun.

Definition
A predicate nominative is a noun or pronoun that follows a linking verb and tells you more about the subject.
Ex. Chris is a plumber.
"Plumber" tells you more about Chris.

What is a predicate adjective?
Definition
Predicate adjectives a adjectives that tell you more about the subject. These can also be called subject complements.
Ex. This cake is good.
"good" is giving you more information about this.
