Term
What is the function of the circulatory system?
Definition
1) It Carries food (nutrients), oxygen and water to the body cells. 2) It removes waste from body cells. 3) It helps the body keep the right temperature. 4) It fights germs and carries chemicals.
Term
What structures are part of the circulatory system?
Definition
The 3 main parts are the heart, blood vessels and blood.
Term
How does the respiratory system work with the circulatory system?
Definition
The respiratory system brings in the oxygen that the circulatory system transports.
Term
How does the blood enter and leave the heart? (Right side)
Definition
Right side:
Blood(CO2)enters the heart through the vein(vena cava) from the body and is received by the right atrium. The blood moves through the tricuspid valve, to the right ventricle. The right ventricle pumps the blood to pulmonary artery and lungs for oxygenation. It dumps its carbon dioxide and picks up its oxygen supply.
Term
How does the blood enter and leave the heart? (Left side)
Definition
Left side:
Blood(O2)enters the heart through the pulmonary vein and is received by the left atrium. The blood moves through the mitral valve, to the left ventricle. the left ventricle pumps the blood through the aortic valve to the aorta, then to the arteries where it leaves the heart to the body.
Term
Describe the function of the heart valves.
Definition
They keep blood moving in one direction through the heart to prevent blood from back flowing into the heart chambers.
Term
Identify the location of the 4 heart valves. Include how the heart valves make the heart beat sounds "lub" "dub" and which valves make each sound.
Definition
The "lub" valves are located between the atria and the ventricles. The "dub" valves are located between the ventricles and large blood vessels leading out of the heart. "lug-dub" is the sound made when the heart valves close.
Term
What are blood vessels?
Definition
They are a network of tubes of various sizes that blood travels through the body.
Term
What are the 3 types of blood vessels and the function of each?
Definition
1) Arteries-carry oxygenated blood AWAY from the heart, except the pulmonary artery. 2) Veins- carry carbon dioxide blood BACK to the heart, except the pulmonary vein. 3) Capillaries- are blood vessels with walls so thin that oxygen, nutrients and waste can pass.
Term
What are the 4 components of blood? Identify the function of each.
Definition
1) White blood cells-destroy germs and make antibodies to fight infection 2) Red blood cells-responsible for carrying oxygen to all cells in the body and picks up carbon dioxide waste 3) Plasma(liquid part of blood)-carries dissolved food to body cells and waste from the cells. 4) Platelets-cells that contain the protein, fibrin to clot blood.
Term
What is a heart valve problem?
Definition
When the valves don't open all the way and cause less blood flow or when the valves don't close all the way and cause back flow of blood. the heart then pumps less blood/less oxygen to the body.
Term
What is a hole in the heart?
Definition
When there is a hole in the septum/blood mixes. Blood received by the body contains less oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Term
What is a heart attack?
Definition
When there is a blood clot in a blocked coronary artery. the heart muscle may be damaged affecting the heart's ability to function.
Term
What is atherosclerosis?
Definition
A heart condition where the artery becomes blocked by fat deposits.
Term
What is high blood pressure?
Definition
When blood pressure remains high and there is a high force of blood on artery walls, causing hardening of the arteries.
Term
What are some treatments for blocked arteries?
Definition
1) coronary bypass- a vein from another part of the body is used to bypass a blocked artery. 2) angioplasty-a balloon like device is inserted into the artery and inflated to open a blocked artery. a stint is run up through the leg and the artery is unblocked when a ballon is inserted.
Term
What are some risk factors for heart disease?
Definition
Some risk factors that increase the chance of an illness, such as high blood pressure, include age, weight, race, gender, body type, lifestyle (smoking/alcohol) diet, exercise and heredity.
Term
What is a stroke?
Definition
it occurs when an artery in the brain becomes blocked due to a blood clot.
