Definition
A check which also threatens another piece; i.e. a double attack which is also a check

Removing the defender
Definition
Capturing a piece which was protecting another piece. In the best case, the defender must choose between capturing the attacking piece, or moving to defend his newly-exposed piece. If removing the defender also causes check, the defender must respond and cannot save his newly-exposed piece.

Causing check by moving an intervening piece. This is especially powerful if the formerly intervening piece can threaten a piece somewhere else, effectively creating a forking check.
