Term
Why are group 1 metls so reactive
Definition
They react to get a full outer shell.
Have only one electron in the outer shell, which they want to lose.
As you go down the chart the electrons are further away from the nucleus, and the force of attraction is smaller, whic makes the electron easier to lose.
The inner electrons shield the outer electron from the nucleus making it easier to lose.
Term
Group 1 Metals
Definition
Alkali Metals
Most reactive metal
Soft metal
Very low denities
Inside is shiny
Term
Equation for Lithium + water and Sodium + Water
Definition
(2)Li + (2)H²O ----> (2)LiOH + H2
(2)Na + (2) H²O ----> (2)NaOH + H2
Term
Mixtures
Definition
The amount of each substance can vary
Has the properties of each substance in the mixture.
The substances an be easily seperated from eachother.
Term
Compound
Definition
The amount of each elent is always fixed.
Has completely diffeemt properties from the elements in the compound.
It is not easy to seperae th elements from the compound. (It needs to be a chemicl reaction)
Term
How to test for hydrogen
Definition
Seperate water or any other substance and capture the hydrogen in a testtube.
When a lighted flint is held near the hydrogen a poppping noise is created.
Term
What are group 2 metal known as
Definition
Alkaline Earth metals
Term
Ionic Bonding
Definition
Where one atom gives or recieves an electron, thus becoming either a negative or positively charged Ion.
Term
Ionic Bonding
Definition
Where one atom gives or recieves an electron, thus becoming either a negative or positively charged Ion.
Term
Covalent Bonding
Definition
Where two or more atoms share electrons
Term
Group 2 equation with atoms
Definition
Mg + HCl ---> Mgcl2 + h2
Magnesium + Hydrochlorc acid --> Magnesium Chloride + Hydrogen
Term
Why is group 2 less reactive than group 1
Definition
Less reactive because group 2 elements have an extra proton meaning more attraction to the electrons.
Term
Why do halogens get less reactive as they go down
Definition
Because as they go down there are more outer shells and the electrons are further away from the nucleus making it harder to attract them
Term
Group 7 elements
Definition
Halogens
Bleaching agents
Less reactive
all non metals
