Term

Different brands of coffee were tested for taste.

What is the dependent variable?

Definition
taste of coffee
Term

Different brands of coffee were tested for taste.

What is the independent variable?

Definition
brand of coffee
Term

Different brands of coffee were tested for taste.

What are some possible control variables?

Definition

amount of coffee

type of water

type of coffee maker

same person taste testing

Term
What is a hypothesis?
Definition
An educated testable guess.
Term
What is a scientific theory?
Definition
A theory supported by evidence that is widely believed by scientists but cannot be proven
Term
There are 20 students in the room is an example of what kind of observation?
Definition
quantitative observation
Term
There are tall students in the room is an example of what kind of observation?
Definition
qualitative observation
Term
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Definition
mass is how much matter something is made up of while weight depends on how much gravity there is
Term
What is a physical change?  Give some examples.
Definition
charactersitics of matter that can be seen through direct observation such as melting point, boiling point, density, and phase of matter
Term
What is a chemical change?
Definition
a change that changes the substance completely and cannot be reversed such as iron rusting
Term
What does a graduated cylinder measure?
Definition
Volume of a liquid
Term
What does a triple beam balance measure?
Definition
mass of an object
Term
What does a thermometer measure?
Definition
temperature of a substance
Term
What is density?
Definition
Density is how much matter per unit volume a substance has.
Term
How do you calculate density?
Definition
Density = mass / volume
Term
How does density tell you if something will float in water or not?
Definition
Water has a density of 1 g/ml.  If the substance has a density lower than that, it will float.  If the substance has a density higher than that, it will sink.
Term
What are the three particles in an atom, where are they found, and what are their charges?
Definition

Proton found in the nucleus with a positive charge

Electron found in the electron cloud with a negative charge

Neutron found in the nucleus with a neutral charge

Term
What does the atomic number of an element tell you?
Definition
atomic number tells you how many protons there are.
Term
How do you find the number of electrons in an element?
Definition
The number of electrons is equal to the number of protons
Term
What is the atomic mass of an element?
Definition
The atomic mass is made up of the protons and neutrons which are found in the nucleus.
Term
How do you find the number of neutrons of an atom?
Definition
The number of neutrons is equal to the atomic mass minus the atomic number
Term
If the atomic mass is 12 and the atomic number is 6, what element is this and how many protons, nuetrons, and electrons are there?
Definition
The element is Carbon, there are 6 protons, 6 electrons, and 6 nuetrons.
Term
What are the charactersitics of metals?
Definition
shiny, good conductors, ductile, and malleable
Term
What are the charactersitics of non-metals?
Definition
dull, brittle, poor conductors
Term
What is the difference between periods and families on the periodic table?
Definition
Periods are the rows, families are the columns
Term
Where are the noble gases found on the periodic table and why are they significant?
Definition
The noble gases are family 18 (the last one) and they are the most stable elements (least reactive) because they have a full outer shell of electrons.
Term
What is the difference between an element and a compound?
Definition
An element is pure form of matter that cannot be broken down int other elements and a compound is a substance composed of more than one element that is chemically bonded together.
Term
What is the difference between the reactants and the products in a chemical reaction?
Definition
The reactants are the substances the chemical reaction starts with and the products are what is left after the chemical reaction.
Term
What is an exothermic reaction?
Definition

A chemical reaction where heat (energy) is released from the reaction.

Term
What is an endothermic reaction?
Definition

A chemical reaction where heat (energy) is absorbed from the reaction.

Term
What are the three phases of matter?
Definition
liquid, solid, and gas
Term
Describe the liquid phase of matter
Definition
The particle in a liquid are packed together but can slide past eachother to move around.  A liquid has a definite volume, but no definite shape.  An example of a liquid is water.
Term
Describe the gas phase of matter.
Definition
The particles in a gas are far apart and can move freely.  A gas has an indefinite volume, and an indefinite shape.  An example of a gas is helium.
Term
Describe the solid phase of matter.
Definition
The particles in a solid are packed together and vibrate.  A solid has a definite volume, and definite shape.  An example of a solid is wood.
