Term
Sleep
Definition
-a behavior
-EEG,EMG,EOG mesure sleep.
- Stage 1 and 2 of sleep not as important as stage 3 and 4 or REM sleep
-Stage 4 is deepest sleep
-Essential for survival
-Permit the brain to rest
Term
Electromyogram (EMG)
Definition
-Electrodes to monitor muscle activity
Term
Electro-oculogram (EOG)
Definition
-electrodes attached around the eyes to monitor eye movements
Term
Alpha activity
Definition
- (8-12 Hz) walking resting activity and not aroused or engaged in mental activity
Term
Beta activity
Definition
(13-30 Hz) walking activity that occurs when a person is alert, attentive and while problem solving.
Term
EEG during sleep
Definition
1. Theta activity- (3.5-7.5 Hz) stage 1 sleep
-Transition stage between sleep and wakefulness
-Drowsy
2. Stage 2 sleep- irregular EEG consisting of theta activity with sleep spindles and k complexes
-soundly sleeping
3. Stage 3 sleep- occurrence of delta activity ( high amplitude waves less 3.5Hz)
-20 to 50% delta activity
4.Stage 4 sleep- more than 50% delta activity
Term
Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep
Definition
-Also called paradoxical sleep
- After approx 90 min sleep EEG becomes desynchronized with theta activity
-eye moves rapidly- EOG and EMG activity goes silent
-Presence of theta and beta
-Promote brain development and learning
