Term
Regarding hyperthermia Athletic trainers require knowledge and information about what to make decisions about environmental dangers
Definition
temperature, humidity and weather
(plus, those on the sports team must recognize signs and symptoms associated with heat-related illness and be able to manage them appropriately
Term
what is hyperthermia?
Definition
increase in body temperature that has caused a number of deaths over the years
Term
Heat Stress
Definition
extreme caution training in the heat because over exposure can result in heat stress
It's preventable
Athletes training in heat are at risk
The body will function if temperature is maintained..must dissipate heat to maintain homeostasis.
Term
Four ( 4 ) ways to dissipate heat
also can gain heat via these 4
Definition
conduction - direct contact
convection-contact with cool air/ water mass
radiation - heat generated from metabolism
Evaporation - sweat evaporating from skin is the most effective
Term
Evaporative heat loss
Definition
sweat glands transport water to surface
evaporation of water takes heat with it.
Evaporation is key when radiant heat and envir temp are higher than body temp
Lose 1 qt of water for up to 2 hrs
Can happen in cold envffironment if unable to dissipate heat
caused by dehydration and inability to sweat in cold environment.
Term
Heat index
Definition
Heat, sunshine and humidity must be monitored ..take into account ambient air temp and relative humidity how how it feels to the body..
Term
Ways of measuring heat index
Definition
Wet bulb globe temperature index ( WBGT )
provides measure to determine precautions in heat and has thermometer reading dry bulb. mercury
Wet bulb thermometer with wet gauze swung in air
black bulb (black casing that measures radiant heat.)
can combine both with psychrometer.. relative humidity
Term
Heat condition
Definition
heat syncope exertional heat cramps, exertional heat exhaustion, exertional heatstroke, exertional hyponatremia
