Definition

Whenever you are talking about something you used to do, did or would do regularly; also a description of a past state (je détestais), you use this tense.

 

(Whenever you are talking about a completed past event (usually done a measurable number of times) you use this tense.)

Definition

1. Identify the verb stem by finding the conjugation of nous in the present tense, then drop the -ons. (parler - nous parlons - parl-)

2. Conjugate with l'imparfait endings.

Definition

These go before the conjugated verbs or between a conjugated verb and an infinitive.

In negative sentences these precede the verb and are placed between ne and the verb.

Je ne lui parle pas souvent.

What are most of the reflexive verbs used for?

Definition
These are used to describe an action in which the subject and object refer to the same person; the subject is acting on him/herself.

What is different about idiomatic reflexive verbs?

Definition

These are used with reflexive pronouns even though they have no obvious reflexive meaning; i.e. the subject is not acting on himself/herself.

 

e.g.: Je m'entendais assez bien avec ma soeur, mais nous nous disputions quelquefois.

(I got along pretty well with my sister, but we used to quarrel sometimes.)
