Term
Nomenclature
Definition
Art of naming
Term
Binary compounds (I & II)
Definition
Compounds made of 2 different elements
Binary I- Metal and non-metal elements
Binary II- Non-metal and non-metal elements
Term
Naming Binary I compounds
Definition
1) Name of cation first
2) Name of anion second (take element name and change the ending to -ide)
Term
Charges
Definition
Type I- Cation only has one charge
Type II- Cation can have more than one charge
Term
Naming Type III Binary Compounds
Definition
1) First element in the formula is named first, and full name is used
2)Second element is named as though it were an anion
3)Prefixes are used to denote the #s of atoms present
4)Prefix mono- is never used to name the first element (implied)
Term
Basic Summary of Naming Binary Compounds
Definition

Binary Compound?

I

Yes

I

Metal Present?

                            -----------------------I-----------------

                            I                                                 I

                           No                                               Yes

Type III (Use prefixes)                Does the metal form more than one cation?

                                  ------------------------------------I--------

                                 I                                                       I

                                 No                                                   Yes

Type I use element name          Find cation charge; Use roman numeral

Term
Non-Binary compound
Definition
3 or more elements present (must be a polyatomic ion present)
Term
Polyatomic ion
Definition
Multiple atoms chemically bonded together in a grouping
Term
Naming Polyatomic compounds
Definition
Name sameway as Type I and II. Only difference is polyatomic ions name never changes, nor does it ever get Roman Numerals
Term
Naming Acids
Definition
1) Name anion first
2) Change name of anion accordingly
Endings:
-ides change to (hydro-)anion(-ic)
-ates change to anion(-ic)
-ites change to anion(-ous)
Only named as acids if it has (aq)
Ex: HCL(g)-Hydrogen monochloride
HCL(aq)-Hydrochloric acid
Term
Writing Formulas from names
Definition
1)Write the symbol for cation first
2)Write symbol for anion second
3)Use subscripts to cancel charges
