Term
Space Planning
Definition
The design of the arrangement of spaces and objects and not with the particulars of materials, finishes, colors, accessories, and the like.

Consists of: 1. Concept Development 2. Space Allocations 3. Design Considerations
Term
Concept Development
Definition
A statement of a specific physical response indicating how a programmatic concept can be satisfied.

The first step in designing. It should be concise and define the essence of the design. Can be made in one to four sentences.

Should be reviewed with the client before more detailed space planning and material selection begins.
Term
Developing a space plan consists of:
Definition
-Verifying existing conditions
-Organization Concepts
-Circulation Patterns
-Furnishings layout
-Code Restrictions
Term
Given an open area, four basic organizing concepts can be used.
Definition
Linear, axial, grid, and central system. Reference graphics.
Term
Linear organizations
Definition
Consist of a series of spaces or rooms that are placed in a single line. Always relate to a unifying line that can be straight, bent, or curved.

The typical layout of office space, with rooms positioned on either side of a corridor that encircles the building's core, is a variation of the linear concept.
Term
Axial Organizations
Definition
Have two or more major linear segments about which spaces or rooms are placed. Like a tree.
Term
Grid Systems
Definition
Consist of two sets of spaced elements. They can become very monotonous and confusing if not used properly.

Because it is usually defined by circulation paths, it is more appropriate for very large spaces or in buildings where a great deal of circulation is required.

Open plan workstations or restaurant tables are two examples where grid organizations are commonly used.
Term
Central Organizations
Definition
Based on one space or point about which secondary elements are placed. Very formal with primary emphasis on the central space.

A hotel lobby is a common example.
Term
Radial Organizations
Definition
When more than one linear organization extends from a centralized point. Bubble diagram-like.
Term
Circulation Patterns
Definition
One of the primary ways of organizing a room, an open space, or an entire interior design project. They are vital to the efficient organization of space and provide people with their strongest orientation within an environment.

All circulation paths are linear b their very nature. Reference Graphics.

Types: Linear, dumbbell-simplest and one of the most flexible spaces are laid out along a straight path that connects two major elements at the ends, Doughnut-efficient b/c it provides a double loaded corridor and automatically makes a continuous exitway so 2 exits are always available if required (appropriate for larger spaces), Radial layout-paths extending from a central area (hotel lobby).
