Term
Heredity
Definition
the passing of traits from parents to offspring
Term
Genetics
Definition
the study of how traits of organisms are passed from parents to offspring
Term
Dominant
Definition
a genetic factor that blocks another genetic factor
Term
Recessive
Definition
a genetic factor that is hidden by the presence of a dominant factor
Term
Gene
Definition
A section of DNA that has information about a specific trait of an organisim
Term
Law of Segregation
Definition
two factors for each trait seperate from each other during meiosis when gametes form
Term
Law of Independent Assortment
Definition
the factors of each trait seperate independently of how factors for other traits seperate
Term
Allele
Definition
Each form of a gene with different information
Term
Phenotype
Definition
Observable traits and all characteristics of an organisim.
Term
Genotype
Definition
Alleles that make up an organisim
Term
Homozygous
Definition
two alleles for a gene having the same information
Term
Heterozygous
Definition
Two alleles for a gene having different information
Term
Punnett Square
Definition
a model used to predict possible gentotypes and phenotypes of offspring
Term
Pedigree
Definition
a model that shows genetic traits inherited by people of a family tree
Term
Incomplete Dominance
Definition
two alleles that produce a genotype that is a blended form of the parents
Term
Codominance
Definition
the interaction of two alleles that can be observed in the phenotype
Term
Multiple Alleles
Definition
genes that have more than two alleles
Term
Sex Chromosome
Definition
Chromosomes that contain genes that determine an organisims gender
Term
Polygenic Inheritance
Definition
When multiple genes determine the phenotype of a trait.
Term
Genetic Disorder
Definition

A genetic or chromosomal mutation that is inherited

Term

Who was Gregor Mendel and why was he important?

Definition
Gregor Mendel is a scientist who conducted experiments about geneticswith pea plants. He is inportant because he was the first to understand genetics and all work on genetics is based off of his
Term

What plants did Mendel use for his experiments and what were the seven traits he studied?

Definition
Mendel used pea plants for his experiments. Flower color, flower position, seed color, seed shape, pod shape, pod color, and stem length.
Term
Why were these plants good for conducting experiments?
Definition
Because there are only two possible forms of a trait so it is easy to track inheritance and they are easy to grow and the reproduce quickly
Term
Analyze the relation ships amoung genes, alleles, chromosomes, and DNA.
Definition
A chromosome is made of DNA, A section of DNA is a gene, a gene contains two alleles.[image]
