The Gold Standard
Definition
Encourage trade becuase it gave businessmen confidence in each others currencies. Under this system paper currency could be exchanged for an equal amount of gold. The U.S. went off the gold standard in 1933 during the Height of the Great Depression. This allowed the government to cirulate more money.

Killing off of an enitre racial, ethnic, or ethnic, or religious group by another group. 1.5 million Armenians of the Ottoman Empire starved, worked, to death or exeecuted by the Turkish government between 1894 and 1922. Armenians accused of treason by the Turks.

Another term for colonialism. Describes the building of empires in the late 19th century by the European power for the pupose of gaining raw materials. markets, and prestige. Africa was gobbled up at this time. (1870-1914) Liberia and Ethiopia retained their independence prior to World War One. British Empire would be the largest in world history. One quarter of the world's population would be under the Union Jack

The Suez Canal
Definition
Completed in 1869 by Frenchman Ferdinand DeLesseps. A sea level canal about 100 miles long. 72 feet across at the bottom and 150 across at the surface. 24 feet deep. 40 hours to traverse the canals length. Saved the British half the distance and two full months sailing time between Britain and India. Existed in ancient times but filled in with sand over time.

The Panama Canal
Definition
Completed by the U.S. in 1914. Theodore Roosevelt Administration had begun the project in 1903 by encouraging Panama to break away from Columbia and sell the canals right-of-way to the U.S.. Ferdinand DeLesseps had tried to dig a canal in Panama in the 1870's but had abandoned the project after the deaths of some 20,000 laborers from malaria and yellow fever. Americans succeeded where the French had failed becuase U.S. found cause of diseases by U.S. Army doctor Walter Reed who encouraged the Army to drain the swamps. Also had advantage of modern steam drivin heavy equipment.

Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) poem. First published in McClure's magazine in Febuary of 1899. Reflected European and North American attitudes of surperiority and obligation. Missionary movement was the embodiment of the idea that black, yellow, and brown races of asia and africa would benifit from the civilizing influences of the white man's religion and technology

Definition
19th Century The Idea, popular with the overwhelming majority of the population, that the U.S. had the "manifest" destiny to rule all the lands between the Atlantic and Pacific. Abraham Lincoln opposed to it.

Used by the U.S. historians to identify foreign policy initiatives taken by the gov in the late 19th century and early 20th centuries. Spanish American War an example. Slogan Remember the Maine to hell with Spain. US gained control of Cuba Guam Puerto Rico and the Philippines as a result of the six month way wih spain.
