MAKING BED

TO PREVENT SAFETY ISSUES
Definition
1) orient patient and family to items in the room
2) assess the patients gait and risk for falling on admission
3) evaluate the patients drug regimen for side effects that increase risk of fall
4) keep bed in low position
5) put mattress onto floor or low platform for high risk for fall if doesn’t ask for help
6) toilet patient on reg schedule to decrease chance’s of falling
7) lock the bed wheels
8) provide night light to aid patient when getting up
9) encourage the use of firm nonskid shoes
10) answer call light quickly so pt trust you
11) tell patient when you will check on them again
12) be sure pt comfrortable and all desired items (call bell) easily reachable
13) encourage use of grab bars in bathroom and tub
14) place your high risk patients in a room close to nurse’s station if possible
to help prevent falls by being able to check more often
15) restrict fluids after 6:00 pm if patient night time frequency to help prevent ups
