  • Heavy usage of geometry in design
  • Entirely designed by Filippo Brunelleschi
  • Using the laws of the Franciscan Order (modesty), Brunelleschi used crisp lines instead of heavy decoration.
  • Mimics Roman architecture- open roof in courtyard bringing light in
  • The little occuli ("roundlets") were commissioned to Andrea della Robbia -they're little babies signifying the children who were killed by the ruthless King Herod- ceramic pieces glazed/ fired

Significance:

  • The most wealthy of the olegarchy ruling Florence, the Medici, who commissioned the building, wanted a grandiose architectural piece that still obeyed Franciscan grandiosity laws.
  • Arches were appropriated from Roman architecture.
  • Continuity, pattern, and clarity are emphasized.
  • The use of 2 different colors of stone was a subtle decoration.
  • In the interior courtyard- columns plced around the opening of the courtyard, including corners created an optical illusion.

  • First bronze statue seen since the Greek period, except it expresses human emotion/ the human condition
  • "The victor is whoever defends the fatherland. All powerful God crushes the angry enemy. Behold, a boy overcomes the great tyrant. Conquer, o citizens!" -inscripted on David
  • Inspired by the struggle of David against Goliath -wits/intelligence vs. strength -meant to represent Florence in a war against Milan, which they eventually won.
  • The first free standing male nude sculpture since the Classical period
  • Smooth texture vs. the detailed head at the bottom shows contrast b/w the characters depicted. 
  • Youth, disturbed innocence, cockiness, homo-eroticism.

Significance: 

  • Massacio used narrative, space- created 1 whole narrative in 1 frame.
  • The narrative highlights the simplicity of the lives of Jesus and his Apostles
  • The composition helps the viewer read the narrative in order- left-to-right
  • The one-point perspective is highlighted by the addition of the building to the right- foreshortening of the figures is also used. 
  • In Italy, tempera was used in addition to frescoes vs. oil in Northern areas of Europe during the Renaissance.
