Term
race
Definition
As applied to humans, a vague term that has multiple meanings, both cultural and biological, referring to group membership.
Term
biological race
Definition
A group of populations sharing certain biological traits that distinguish them from other groups of populations.  In practice, the biological concept of race has been difficult to apply human populations.
Term
microsatellite DNA
Definition
Repeated short sequence of DNA; the number of repeats is highly variable.
Term
single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs)
Definition
Specific positions in a DNA sequence that differ at one base.  For example, the DNA sequences CCTGAA and CCCGAA differ in the third position - one sequence has the base T and the other the base C.
Term
haplotype
Definition
A combination of gene or DNA sequences that are inherited as a single unit.
Term
haplogroup
Definition
A set of related haplotypes that share similar mutations.
Term
genetic distance
Definition
An average measure of relatedness between populations based on a number of traits.
Term
genetic distance map
Definition
A graphic representation that shows the genetic relationships between populations, based on genetic distance measures.
