Term
How many genes, in general, are on each chromosome?
Definition
Term
How are sexual and asexual reproduction different? How are they similar?
Definition
Term
What is the difference between the two chromosomes that make up a homologous pair?
Definition
Term
What can you determine from a karyotype?
Definition
Term
What are the human X and Y chromosomes?
Definition
the two sex chromosomes. X is inherited from the mother, Y from the father. XY = Male XX = female X0 = shemale
Term
What is the difference in chromosome number between regular body cells and gametes or sex cells?
Definition
regular body cells are diploid(2n) and have 46 chromosomes and sex cells are haploid(n) and have 23 chromosomes.
Term
What is meant when the symbol 2n is used?  What is meant when the symbol 1n is used? Be sure to use the terms haploid and diploid.
Definition
2n means that a cell has two sets of chromosomes (diploid), one from each parent. N means that the cell contains only one set of chromosomes.
Term
There are a variety of sexual life cycles.  How are they the same and how are they different?
Definition
Term
What is alternation of generations?  Give examples.
Definition
Term
What kind of life cycle do animals have? Plants and some algae? Fungi and protists?
Definition
Term
What kind of cells does meiosis produce?
Definition
meiosis is a method of reproduction for gametes.
Term
Know the stages of meiosis in detail.
Definition

MEIOSIS I:

Prophase I -

Metaphase I -

Anaphase I -

Telophase I and Cytokinesis -

MEIOSIS II:

Prophase II -

Metaphase II -

Anaphase II -

Telophase II and Cytokinesis -

Term
What is the synaptonemal complex and when does it disappear?
Definition
The synaptonemal complex is a protein structure that forms between two homologous chromosomes during meiosis and disappears during late prophase.
Term
Know when synapsis occurs.  Know when you can find tetrads.  Know when crossing-over occurs.
Definition
synapsis is the pairing of homologous chromosomes during prohphase I of meiosis.
Term
Be able to analyze data about DNA content with regard to the amount of DNA in a gametophyte cell, a cell in the G0 phase, a cell in the G2 phase,  & a gamete.
Definition
Term
How are mitosis and meiosis similar, and how are they different?
Definition
Term
How is genetic variation increased by a sexual life cycle?
Definition
Term
How many different combinations of maternal and paternal chromosomes are possible for human gametes?
Definition
Term
When does independent assortment happen?  What is it?
