½ ÷ 2 = ½ x ½ = ¼

Definition

If you "double" something, then you multiply it by 2.

So, ½ x 2 = 1/2 x 2/1 = 2/2 = 1.

You will need 1 cup of butter.

 How much vanilla do you need if you want to HALF the recipe?

Definition

If you "half" something, then you divide it by 2.

So,  1/8 ÷ 2 = 1/8 x 1/2 = 1/16

You will need 1/16 tsp of vanilla.
