Term
Similar structures that related species have inherited from a common ancestor is called what?
Definition
Homologous structures
Term
The process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce than other members of the same species is called what?
Definition
Natural selection
Term

Which of the following is the best example of an adaptation that helps organisms survive in their environment?

a-thin delicate leaves on plants in a cold climate

b-an extensive root system in desert plants

c-a thick coat of fur on animals that live in the desert

d-green coloring in lizards living on gray rocks

Definition
an extensive root system in desert plants
Term
Evolution that occurs slowly is described by the pattern of ______________________, while rapid changes are described by ______________________.
Definition
gradualism; punctuated equilibrium
Term

Examine the chart, what does the chart tell you about the age of fossil H vs K?

Definition
The age of K is older than H.
Term

What can you infer about the environment of the organisms that lived here?

Definition
This was an aquatic environment.
Term

Look at these skulls and nostril areas. Write 2 similarities and 2 differences, AND a reason why the skulls and nostril areas changed to survive.

Definition

Look at the picture, what do you see? Some differences I see are the width of the skulls, the placement of the nostrils, the width of the eye sockets, the spikes on the middle skull to name a few.

The similarities I see are, they all have eye sockets and nostrils and they have have narrow snouts.

One possible reason why the skulls and nostril areas changed to survive could have been that the environment in which the animal lived changed from land to water. My evidence is that the nostril in the oldest fossil is at the end, which means a land animal, then the nostrils moved to the middle of the skull and finally to the top of the head proving it is more like a whale (water animal).

Term

Look at the changes in hooves in the diagram below, select 2 of the four and give specific examples of the type of environment they likely lived in and why you think so.  Also, tell what environment whey would have struggled to survive in and why.

Definition

Possible answers:

a and b: wet areas or rocky land areas, evidence to prove this is the way the bottom of the hooves are spread out to indicate that they used them for traction.

c and d: flatter, hilly, or prairie environments, evidence to prove this is the flat bottom on the hooves are used in easily terrains.

Then tell what environment whey would have struggled to survive in and why.

Term

Compare the whale with the skeletons of a fish, human, bird, dog and crocodile.  Tell about the similarities in body and bone structure, give reasons why/how land and marine mammals have developed/evolved for their environment.  Describe how the whale has changed over time.

Definition

1. You need to analyze skeletons and list what you see that are the same (similar). Many possible answers. You could compare leg bones, backbones, arms, etc. When you compare talk about what you see, don't just say the leg bones look similar. That doesn't tell me anything.

2. Then give reasons why/how marine mammals have evolved for their environment. This is your option based on what you can prove by looking at the bones. Our book had excellent reading on this on page 211.

3. Describe how the whale has changed over time. For this question you can talk about how the pelvic bones and legs have changed, again page 211 is an excellent resource to use.

Term

True of False:

The oldest recorded living organisms was bacteria.

Definition
True
Term

True or False:

Lucy was the first intelligent primate who lived around 4 million years ago.

Definition

Term

This fossil would be identified as what?

Definition

Crinoid

Remember finding these in our fossil in a bag activity? Crinoid is a type of a sea lily.

Term

These would be identified as what type of fossil?

Definition
Trilobites
Term

True of false:

These fossils would be identified as shark teeth.

Term

True or False:

Earthworms are older than jellyfish according to the fossils that have been found by archaeologists.

Definition
False
Term
What is the branch of biology that studies the forms of life that existed in former geologic periods, primarily by studying fossils?
Definition
Paleontology
Term

Woolly mammoth fossils have been found with human-made arrowheads embedded in them. Using this evidence, infer what may have helped lead to the mammoth's extinction.

Definition
When they found arrowheads embedded in Woolly mammoth fossils this proves that humans hunted them. Humans could have helped lead the mammoths to extinction if they over hunted them.
Term
Who is credited with the continental drift theory that all land was once connected or there was a super-continent (Pangaea).
Definition
Alfred Wegener
Term

True or False:

The word "Fossil" means "to hide or to bury".

Definition
False!! It means to dig up in Latin!
Term
The T-Rex found in South Dakota was named what?
