Term
Lymphatic System
Definition
Helps to fight off inside anvadors.  Keeps us warm/cool with...  sweatglands/capilaries
Term
Lymphatic helps with synthesis of
Definition
Vitamin D
Term
Epidermus has what
Definition
Squamos cells/ Basal Cells/ Melanocyte
Term
what is responsible for nails?
Definition
Kerotin/Kerotinocytes
Term
Melanocyte is
Definition
charged with making melonin, where the coloration of your skin comes from
Term
We all have the same number of melanocytes but it's essentially about
Definition
How much they are pumping out.
Term
How much UVR does dark skin vs. light skin filter out?
Definition
dark skin- 95% light skin- 50%
Term
UVC/UVB/UVA
Definition
UVC- caught in atmosphere. UVB- sunburn, melanoma, DNA cells being altered. UVA- more reaches us than UVB+UVC combined but is less affective.UVA 400 nm - 320 nm
UVB 320 nm - 290 nm
UVC 290 nm - 100 nm
Term
What are the disadvantages of sunburn?
Definition
More prone to infection. hard to provide temperature control.
Term
Photochemical effects
Definition
certain chemicals that break down.  folic acid, riboflavin, Vitamin E through photolysis.
Term
UVR will act on a particular compound that will
Definition
enhance the production of Vitamin D, which is why we have dark skin.
Term
Rickets
Definition
lack of Vitamin D in children.
Term
Osteomalacia
Definition
adult form of Rickets
Term
Cephalic Index
Definition
ratio of width to length of the skull.  Humans: 70-90 %
Term

There is a clear relationship between

Definition
Height and skull length.
Term
Also head shape is influenced by:
Definition
environmental temp.
Term
Cooler temperature will create what kind of head shape? Why?
Definition
Rounder. for evaporation purposes. Rounder head has a lower suface to volume ratio.
Term

Up to how much of our body heat is radiated through our heads?

Definition
80%
Term
Brain Size- Cranial Capacity
Definition
average of 1545cc. Massive amount of Variation. 1250-1525 cc
Term
Best info. on facial features comes from studying what?
Definition
Bones & teeth.  Diff. tissues developed for diff. environments.
Term
Smaller teeth shows
Definition
Better diets
Term

Forward pertrusion of dental arches

Definition
Prognathisism
Term
cheek bones
Definition
zygomatic arch
Term
attachment points for your muscles
Definition
Zygomatic Arch, Brow Ridge
Term
What adds extra strenth to front teeth?
Definition
Shovel shaped incisor
Term
We cannot use teeth to do what
Definition
Make ethnic classifications
Term
Nasal Index
Definition
Cannot be used to classify race
Term
Nasal Index
Definition
width/length x100
Term
Nose is good for what
Definition
Warms air when it is cold, nucosal membrane up to 1L a day.
Term
Lungs require how much humidity?
Definition
100%
Term
Dryer environments want what kind of nose? Desert & arctic regions
Definition
Narrow
Term
eye color is represented by.... blue eyes/dark eyes
Definition
malnin.. less melanin/more
Term
What else controls eye color?
Definition
Diff. gened on diff. foci
Term
Further away from equator you are
Definition
Taller you are on average
Term
in Rainforest
Definition
100% humidity, body doesn't need as many sweat glands.
Term
weight
Definition
does not closely correlate with height. We tend to store fate in the same places. Socio-economic factors are more relevant. But it does correlate to mean air temp.
Term
Humans need a body temperature of:
Definition
-+ 3 degrees 98.6
Term
BMR
Definition
Basal Metabolic Rate- lowest rate of bio-chemical activity consistent with life
Term
How do we measure BMR
Definition
No eating for 12-24 hrs and remain still
Term
Forms of thermal regulation
Definition
1) thickness- some ppl are "thicker" than others. 2)subcutaneous circulation. the contraction and subtraction of blood vessels in the dermis to either cool or warm you. When blood vessels are smaller, they are warming you up.
Term
Outside temp is most comforable in what.
Definition
77-80.6 degrees farenheit.
Term
Fourier Law
Definition
1)Heat loss is proportional to the body surface and to the difference between the bodies air temperature and the temperature of the environment. 2) Heat loss in a body is inversely proportional to the thickness of the shell. Body's surface area to weight is important.
Term
Bergmans Rule
Definition
Populations in colder regions of a species range, tend to be thicker and heavier than their warmer region counterparts and vice versa
Term
Allen's Rule
Definition
Protuding body parts tend to be shorter at the colder end of species range and vice versa
Term
Adaptations to heat
Definition
People of rainforest environments have the adaptation that they will sweat less in humid environments. Aborigines also have the capacity to drink larger volumes of water. 1 L in 17 seconds.  We would have to pee asap. Europeans take a 1:40 to down the same amount. Ppl adapted to warmer environments sweat out less salts.
Term
Acclimation
Definition
Dif. than adaptation. short terms.  Adaptation happens through several generations. We all have the ability to acclimate, Behavior is also important to this.
Term
Humans have
Definition
Always lived in warmer environments but not colder. We have had to adapt.  For ex. coats, fire, high proteins.
