Term
Neurons respond to environmental changes by means of three special features...
Definition

axons

dentrites

glial cells

Term
axons
Definition
carry signals away to the neuron to points where communication occurs within the neurons
Term
dentrites
Definition
detect and carry info from other nerve cells to cell body
Term
glial cells
Definition
hold neurons in place
Term
synaps
Definition

tiny gaps within neurons across which they communicate

Term

why is it important that the neuronal membrane is selectively permeable?  What happens as a result?

Definition
it keeps positively charged ions from freely entering axon through gates or channels.

As a result the membrane becomes electrically polarized, such that the inside of the cell is more negative charged than the outside

Term
As action potential occurs what 5 things happen?  Where does this occur?
Definition

·        1) some part of the axon membrane becomes depolarized causing a gate to open.

2) Positively charged ions rush into the axon, causing the neighboring gates to open as well, 3) and more positive ions rush in. This chain of events occurs along the entire length of the axon
