Term
What is metabolism?
Definition
all interrelated biochemical process that take place in a living organism
Term
photosynthesis
Definition
the process by which plants produce food using energy from the sun
Term
autotrophs
Definition
organisms that can make their own food
Term
heterotrophs
Definition
depend on autotrophs to make their food, eat "other" organisms
Term
Three Types of Photosynthesis
Definition

1. Plants (sunflowers)

2. Algae (giant kelp)

3. Cyanobacteria (bacteria)

Term
Where does photosynthesis take place in plants and algae?
Definition
chloroplasts in the plant leaf
Term
Which membrane absorbs energy from sunlight?
Definition
thylakoid membrane
Term
What are the microscopic pores in which C02 enters and 02 exits from the leaf?
Definition
stomata
Term
How many chloroplasts does a typical mesophyll cell contain?
Definition
30-40
Term
Chloroplasts consist of what 2 primary parts?
Definition

1. thylakoids

2. stroma

Term
Thylakoids
Definition
membrane bound sacs in stacks called grana
Term
stroma
Definition
fluid that surrounds the thylakoids
Term
PHOTOSYNTHESIS FORMULA
Definition
6CO2+12H20+LIGHT--->C6H12O6+6O2+6H2O
Term

What percentage of all water is

absorbed by plants in photosynthesis?

Definition
less than 1%
Term
Water and Oxygen in photosynthesis
Definition

Water- source of electrons

Oxygen- released as a by-product

Term
In what case would the stomata close during photosynthesis?
Definition

-If water was in short supply or light intensities too high

- Thus reduces supply of carbon dioxide available for photosynthesis

Term

ATP

(Adenosine triphosphate)

Definition

-cellular energy molecule

-releases energy when bonds are broken

-supplies the energy for most of the activities of living things

*ATP BECOMES ADP*

Term
NADPH/FADPH2
Definition

-electron carrier molecule, carries electrons to and from various molecules

-have an empty and full state

Term
The Electron Carrier NAD+
Definition

1. The NAD+ within a cell, along with 2 hydrogen atoms that are part of the food that is supplying energy for the body

2. NAD+ is reduced to NAD by accepting an electron from a hydrogen atom. It also picks up another hydrogen atom to become NADH

3. NADH carries the electrons to a later stage of repiration then drops them off, becoming oxidized to its original form, NAD+

Term
What are the 2 primary stages to photosynthesis?
Definition

1. Light Reactions: sunlight is converted to energy, produces energy

2. Calvin cycle (Light Independent Reactions): carbon molecules are bound into sugar, requires energy
