ASOMATOAGNOSIA

Definition

Also a Right Parietal Lobe Lesion


ASOMATOGNOSIA (Body Agnosia) = loss of body image recognition  (usually LEFT side of body)

   

-Sensory Extinction – loss of perception of LEFT side when both right and left sides are stimulated

   

-Neglect of Left side  including left visual field often with Denial of left side of body as part of self and anosognosia (does not recognize one’s own

                                         deficits).

DOMINANT  HEMISPHERE

(Usually Left Hemisphere)

Definition

The Dominant Hemisphere is  defined

as the hemisphere which mediates

communication or language functions.

 

The Dominant hemisphere  also plays

a major role in motor functions and

Performance and contains more

dopamine than the non-dominant

hemisphere.

 

The LEFT hemisphere is the Dominant

Hemisphere in 95% of the population

including most left handed individuals.

VISUAL  APHASIA   =   Inability to  read (alexia). Some comprehension loss.  


DYSLEXIA   - in children is a deficit (often inherited) in the left  parieto-temporal cortex which exhibits hypoactivity in PET scans when attempting to read.

Arcuate Fasciculus Lesion

Definition

-Arcuate Fasciculus connects Wernicke’s Receptive (sensory) speech area with  Broca’s Expressive (motor)  speech area.


CONDUCTION APHASIA   Broca’s and Wernicke’s Areas  are Uncoupled.  Speech:  Cannot repeat or read aloud.
