Term
Eukaryotic Cell
Definition
An evolution of the prokaryotic cell, usually is much larger than the prokaryotic cell and contains a nucleus and more complicated organelles
Term
Prokaryotic Cell
Definition
Earliest type of cell, can be traced all the way back to the earliest type of fossils. Does not contain a nucleus or any other type of complicated organelles.
Term
Plasma Membrane
Definition
a part in both plant and animal cells, regulates the chemical flow in and out of the cell and defines the boundary of the cell.
Term
Nucleus
Definition
Found only in eukaryotic cells, contains the cells genetic material in the form of DNA.
Term
Cytoplasm
Definition
Found in both plant and animal cells, is a fluid that contains the organelles and keeps them in place.
Term
Chloroplast
Definition
Found only in plant cells, does all of the plants photosynthesis.
Term
organelle
Definition
A part of the cell that has a specific job to do.
Term
centrosome
Definition
an organelle near the nucleus of the cell that contains the centrioles, found only in animal cells.
Term
centriole
Definition
found in the centrosome, these are small cylindrical organelles found near the nucleus occurring in pairs.
Term
Ribosome
Definition
a small organelle consisting or RNA that binds together and synthesizes polypeptides and proteins, found in the cytoplasm of cells.
Term
mitochondria
Definition
An organelle in which there is a lot of and needed in all cells to perform ATP and cellular respiration.
Term
lysosome
Definition
an organelle that is found in the cytoplasm containing enzymes and is usually enclosed in a membrane, found in animal cells.
Term
peroxisome
Definition
a small organelle that is found in the cytoplasm that contains the reducing enzymes catalase.
Term
golgi apparatus
Definition
a complex of vesicles and folded membranes within the cytoplasm of cells, involved with secretion and intracellular transport. Found in eukaryotic cells.
Term
nucleolus
Definition
a small dense spherical structure in the nucleus of a cell during a certain phase.
Term
vacuole
Definition
a space or vesicle within the cytoplasm of a cell, enclosed by a membrane and usually has some sort of fluid.
Term
chromosome
Definition
a threadlike structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of living cells. carries the genetic information of most cells.
Term
endoplasmic reticulum
Definition
a network of membranous tubes within the cytoplasm of a cell, it is combined with the nuclear membrane. it usually has some ribosomes in the layers and is involved in protein and lipid synthesis. Only found in eukaryotic cells.
