Term
ACR (Attenuation to Crosstalk Ratio)
Definition
The difference between NEXT in dB and attenuation in dB. Good cabling performance corresponds to high ACR values (in negative dB), which results when NEXT is much higher than attenuation.
Term
Attenuation
Definition
The loss of signal power along the length of a cable measured in dBs. The lower, the better.
Term
AWG (American Wire Gauge)
Definition
Identifies the physical size of a wire. The lower the AWG number, the bigger the wire.
Term
AXT (Alien Crosstalk)
Definition
A measure of crosstalk between separate physical cables.
Term
Backbone
Definition
The primary conductor of a data network that runs the length of the network and interconnects all network segments.
Term
Bandwidth
Definition
A measure of the amount of data that can be transmitted over a given medium in a specified time. (exa. 3.2 GB per second)
Term
BNC Connector
Definition
A cylindrical push-and-twist connector that uses barrel and T-connectors to join coaxial cable or connect to a network or source device.
Term
Broadband (Data Networking)
Definition
The high speed transmission media that transmits data at speeds of 1.544 Mbps or faster.
Term
Capacitance
Definition
A measurement of the capacity to store electrical charge across conductive elements that are separated by an insulating material (dielectric). Measured in farads.
