Cards

Term
Erythrocyte
Definition
4.5-5.0 million per mm^3
Life span: 120 days
Term
Reticulocyte
Definition
-Final stage before mature RBC
-Little bit of nuclear matter
-RNA stains blue w/ Supravital
Term
Granulocytes

Agranulocytes
Definition
Neutrophil, Eosinophil, basophil

Monocyte, Lymphocyte
Term
Neutrophil
Definition
-40-75% of white blood cells
-Life span: circulation-1 week, in tissue-1-4 days
-in inflammatory response it secretes enzymes and phagocytosis
-Look for multi-lobulated nucleus and small granules
Term
Eosinophil
Definition
-1-6% of white blood cells
-Lifespan: 2 weeks
-Active in parasitic invasion
-Look for large granules that stain bright
Term
Basophil
Definition
<1% of white blood cells
-LIfespan is 1-2 years
-Releases histamine and heparin in allergic rxns
-Look for dark purple staining large granules
Term
Monocyte
Definition
2-10% of white blood cells
-Largest WBC
-Lifespan is 2-5 days in circulation, 1-3 months in tissue
-Become macrophages
-Look for bi-lobular nucleus w/clear cytoplasm
Term
Lymphocyte
Definition
-20-50% of WBC
-Lifespan: months to years
-Involved in immunological defense mechanisms
-Very dark, dense round nucleus
Term
Megakaryocytes
Definition
HUGE
Found in bone marrow
Make platelets
Term
Platelets
Definition
-Also called thrombocytes
-Have cell adhesion molecules
-Makes plugs for the vasculature
Term
Lymph Node
Definition
-Medulla-holds medullary cord/sinuses
-Cortex-outer portion w/lymphatic nodules
-Lymph- dense lymphatic tissue
-Germinal Center- center of lymphatic nodule
Term
Germinal Center
Definition
Cortex of lymphatic nodule is dense lymphatic tissue
Germinal Center-has lymphoblasts and monoblasts
Germinal center stains lighter than cortex
Term
Peyer's Patches
Definition
Found in mucosa of ileum.
Histologically called dense lymphatic tissue
Term
Appendix
Definition
Simple columnar epithelium w/striated border
Has lymph Nodule that is dense lymphatic tissue
Term
Spleen
Definition
White pulp- is lymph nodule
Red Pulp- has blood
Trebecula- invaginations of the capsule(DCCTRA)
Germinal center has immature T and B cells
Term
Thymus
Definition
Cortex is dense lymphatic tissue
Look for lobules(like in liver)
Interlobular septa are DCCTRA
Hassals corpuscle found in center of nodule
Term
Tonsil
Definition
Lymph nodule is dense lymphatic tissue
Look for stratified squamous of the mouth
Notice how nodules are randomly arrayed as opposed to a regular lymph node
Term
Lymphatic Vessel
Definition
Lined with endothelium
Have valves to prevent back flow
Most like veins
Notice lack of muscle as compared to vasculature.
