1. View… train the mind to see suffering
2. Understanding… must comprehend the view and understand that desiring objects causes pain and suffering
3. Effort… must be put forth in order to reduce pain and suffering, there must be an effort to quit and go against the grain of instinct
4. Speech… refrain from speech that is suffering (lying, speaking badly)
5. Action... must commit actions that do not cause pain and suffering

1. sutras- sermons/lectures of the Buddha
2. vinaya- monastic traits- monks, awakening, teach others Buddhist order
first 5 rules/precepts:
-no killing
-no stealing
-no lying
-no taking of intoxicants
-no sexual misconduct this reduces bad karma, reduces greed, helps to not lose sight of real world or lose your mind, helps to be celebate and not have karmal desire

Eternalism (atman), nihilism- everything is destroyed
The Buddha says you should reject nihilism bc there is rebirth, you should reject eternalism bc everything is impermanent and there’s no such thing as an atman. The atman is the sense of self, which must be renounciated in order to detach
