When is it appropriate to draw your weapon?
Definition
The drawing of a personal defense weapon is classified as a Level 1 use of force. A personal defense weapon may be drawn from its holster, or a long gun loaded with lethal munitions shouldered for firing (in preparation for firing), only if: (1) deadly force is authorized: or (2) there is a reasonable possibility that the use of deadly force may be required. Simply drawing a weapon does not alone constitute a use of force, and may be considered officer presence.

A search done by firmly crushing and passing hands over a subject's clothed body. This search may also extend to the "grab area" of an individual suspected to have a weapon. "Grab area" includes purses, outer garments such as a coat, and the immediate surrounding area. Primary goal of a frisk search is to find all weapons or items that could be reasonably construed as weapons. If evidence of a violation of federal law is discovered it is considered a "plain view discovery". Reasonable suspicion is necessary.
