Term
Define the 4 muscle tissue properties.
Definition
EXCITABILITY-can respond to stimulation(nervous system)
CONTRACTILITY- contracts (shortens)
EXTENSIBILITY- can return to original shape, continue to retract
ELASTICITY- contains elastic qualities, returns to original shape
Term
What are the functions of skeletal muscle tissue?
Definition
MOVEMENT-pulls on skeleton levers to produce movement
POSTURE-slow twitch muscles produce muscle tone=constant tension
SUPPORT- soft tissue (abdominal organs)
REGULATE- materials enter/exit body
TEMP- heat from MM contraction
Term
Be prepared to identify the CT of muscle (i.e. epi/peri/endomysium).
Definition
EPIMYSIUM- upon the muscle belly (Dense CT)
PERIMYSIUM- separates bundles (fascicles) or muscle fibers (Dense CT)
ENDOMYSIUM- separates individual MM fibers (cells) (Delicate CT, allows movement)
Term
What is a tendon?
Definition
attach muscle to bone
strong cords of CT
Consists of collagen protein fibers
highly elastic
Term
Be prepared to define and label the Neuromuscular junction.
Definition
Term
What is the hierarchy of muscle organization?
Definition
MUSCLE- largest, entire sx
FASCICLES- bundles of MM fibers
MM FIBERS- MM cells
MYOFIBRILS- baby fibers
MYOFILAMENTS- proteins that interact, produce contraction
Term
What is a sarcomere?
Definition
smalles FX and SX unit of MM where contraction occurs
Term
Be prepared to identify and/or draw the various components of a sarcomere.
Definition
Term
Define the Sliding Filament Theory
Definition
Term
What is a motor unit?
Definition
motor neuron and the muscle fibers is controls= motor unit
MOTOR NEURONS- neurons that control effectors
Term
How do motor units play a role in muscle control?
Definition
Term
Define hypertrophy and atrophy of muscle.
Definition
Term
What are major differences b/w Type I, IIa, and IIb muscle fibers
Definition
Term
Distibution of muscle fibers
Definition
Term
What are the 3 types of muscular contraction and the 3 forms of resistance?
Definition
