What is subacute bacterial endocarditis?
Definition
A gradual illness that can result in stroke. A biofilm of normal flora forms, usually S. epidermis or sometimes veridians
- Dental procedures, heart deformities a risk. Can form an abscess

Violent chills and fever that can lead to shock. Very high mortality rate.

Definition
bacteria enter the bloodstream and release endotoxin. Macrophages respond. LUNGS very susceptible to damage

Definition
"Rabbit fever" - skin ulcers and enlarged lymph nodes caused by Francisella tularensis, gram(-).
- Spreads from animal carcasses. A vaccine exists. Tx with gentamicin

Definition
"Undulant Fever" - achy, enlarged lymph nodes, weight loss. Caused by Brucella melitensis, all from animals
**Causes endocarditis and osteomyelitis. Contaminates milk and meat. Meat-packing industry. Tx w/ tetracycline & rifampin

Definition
"Black Death" from a flea bite. Lymph nodes called buboes, high fever, bleeding under the skin, bloody cough
- Caused by Yersinia pestis

What are the plasmids in Yersinia pestis?
Definition
- Pla - activates plasminogen factor to dissolve clots. To spread from entry site
- Yops - stops phagocytosis. Enhance survival
- F1 - capsule stops phagocytosis, used in vaccine. Multiply in macrophages
