Stage 1

• Perception: perceive major sound distinctions in the world's language in beginning but by the end restricted to own language
• Production: reflective sounds, cooing, vocal play, babbeling, jargon
• Link: ear mouth link
• Communication: turn taking, preillicutionary to illicutionary

• Perception: good perception but may have problems in difficult settings, use of unusal words
• Production: first words to 2 word utterance
• Link: mismatches made so use substitutions, repetitions, and deletion
• Communication: able to use 150 to 300 words to communicate needs and wants

• Perception: beginning stages of phonological awareness
• Production: by end of stage have mastered a wide range of sound
• Link: less mismatchs
• Communication: better skills when communicating with unfamiler person

• Perception: very adult-like
• Production: may experience difficulty with clusters, late 8 sound
• Link: illiteration and isolation of sound
• Communication: learning to read and write

• Can be formal or informal
• Take 5 to 10 min
• Determine if normally developing or need to have more testing
