M: white and dark grey, less colorful

F: more colorful than male, rufious flanks and slight rufious belly band

Call: loud, dry/harsh rattle, (the king has the rattle)

Come in March/April, red cap, back is black and white, wings are black with vertical white bar, yellow belly, black bib/breast stripe, zebra side-head pattern (black, white above eye, black eye strap, white malar, black border), white rump

Pileated Woodpecker:

Largest (~crow), overall black, longer neck, white stripe from base of beak on side of neck, red on head -- crest, 

M: red extends from base of beak to back of head, has red malar stripe

F: red on top of head, black malar stripe

Rufious breast & belly, looks like it has black holes all over breast & belly, black bib (crescent shape), blue/grey back of head, brown on back wings, red on base of neck in back, rufious around eyes and on neck, white rump, flies in a wave shape

M: black malar stripe (mustache)

F: no malar stripe

Hairy Woodpecker:

BUT - very long beak (goes way past eye)

Call: stays same peek pitch, followed by a harsh rattle

Red-breasted Nuthatch:

Smaller than White-breasted, looks tailless, underside red, grey wings and back, black head, white above eye, black eye stripe, hang upside down, whiteish cheeks, beak curls up

White-breasted Nuthatch:

No zebra stripe near eye, white face, white lower, black cap, blue/grey back and wings, upward pointing beak

Call: fast, nasally beeps or "what-what-what-what-what" followed by "yanks"

Brown Creeper:

Long tail, always upright, beak pointing down, hugs close to tree, white lower/underside, rose undertail coverts, brown back and wings, light right above eye, upside-down V shape on end of wing

Red-headed Woodpecker:

 Red head, white underside, black wings, white secondary panals, blue bill with black tip

Call: loud "tchur-tchur" or metallic sounding screams

Black-capped Chickadee:

Tiny, black capped, white cheek patch, black chintan underside, acrobatic, often hangs upside down/sideways w/bib, grey colored/

Call: says "cheeseburger", also "chickadee-dee-dee-dee"

Downy Woodpecker:

F: no dot

Small, black/white checkering stripe on wings. Black back w/white stripe down center. Black/white stripe on head, short beak (only to eye)

Call: descending "pik" trill

American Crow:

Only large black bird in S WI, all black, heavy bill, fan-shaped tail

Call: cah!

Blue Jay:

Blue upper and white lower, crested, long tail that has black thin bands on it

Call: "Jay, Jay!" and "Happy feet, happy feet"
