Type of Tissue:  Epithelium

Specific Name: Simple Cuboidal

Definition:  Single layer of cube-shaped epithelial cells, each with a central nucleus

Type of Tissue: Epithelium

Specific Name: Pseudostratified Columnar

Description:  Single layer of epithelial cells where some are longer than others giving the "false" appearance of stratification.  Goblet cells are found between the pseudostratified cells.

Type of Tissue:  Connective

Specific Name:  Loose or Areolar

Description: Soft packaging tissue that cushions and protects body organs.

Slide:  Most of the cells are fibroblasts surrounded by a scattered-like arrangement of collagen and elastic fibers.

Type of Tissue:  Connective

Specific name:  Andipose (fat)

Description: Dense concentration of fat cells within a framework of areolar tissue.

Type of Tissue: Connective

Specific Name:  Hyaline Cartilage

Description: Type of cartilage with a smooth matrix (between the cells.)

Type of Tissue: Connective

Specific Name: Bone

Description: Supports the body and serves as a site for the attachment of skeletal muscles.

Slide: The cells are called osteocytes and they are found in cavities called lacunae.  The structural units of a compact bone are osteons.

Type of Tissue: Connective

Specific Name: Blood

Description: Red and white blood cells suspended in a fluid called plasma.

Slide: Red blood cells lack a nucleus and are red.  White blood cells have a stained nucleus.  Red blood cells outnumber white blood cells about 800:1.

Type of Tissue: Muscle

Specific Name: Skeletal

Description:  Attaches to the bones of the body.

Slide: They have many nuclei within each cell and have stripes down their length called cross-striations.

Type of Tissue: Muscle

Specific Name: Cardiac

Description:  Only found in the wall of the heart.

Slide: They are striated (striped) and have intercalated discs.

Type of Tissue:  Nervous

Specific Name: Motor Neuron

Description:  Consists of neurons and their support cells.  Specialized to conduct nerve impulses.

Slide:  Motor neurons have several dendrites (A crystal mass with a branching, treelike structure) and an axon (long threadlike part of a nerve cell) that extend out from the body.
