Term
Ten Themes that unify life:
Definition
Bilogical Systems; Cellular Basis of Life; Form and Function; Reproduction and Inheritance; Interaction with the Environment; Energy and Life; Regulation; Adaptation and Evolution; Biology and Society; and Scientific Inquiry
Term
System
Definition
complex organization formed from a simpler combination of parts.
Term
Photosynthesis
Definition
Process by which plant cells make food. (Process by which certain living plant cells combine CO2 and H2O in the presence of chloryphyl and light energy to form PGAL and release Oxygen as a waste product.)
Term
Producer
Definition
produce food upon wich the entire ecosystem depends.
Term
Consumer
Definition
animals and other organisms that eat (consume) the food made by the producers.
Term
Homeostasis
Definition
"steady state" internal stability maintained by the body. Ex. ability of birds and mammals to regulate body temperature
Term
Adaptation
Definition
an inherited trait that helps the organism's ability to survive and reproduce in its perticular environment. ex. characteristics that camouflage each mantid species.
Term
Population
Definition
is a localized group of organisms belonging to the same species.
Term
Natural Selection
Definition
process by which individuals with inherited characteristcs well suited to the environment leave more offspring than do o9ther individuals. "Survival of the fittest." Ex. Birds spot light colored beetles more easily than dark ones; dark beetles have a better chance at survival and reproduction.
Term
Evolution
Definition
a process of change over time. (Generation to generation change in the proportion of different inherited genes in a population)
ex. Beetle, genes for darker color become more common over time.
Term
What happens to the chemical energy stored in the food consumers eat?
Definition
It is converted to other forms of energy as the organism carries out its life activities: Moving, thinking, breathing, seeing and everything else you do requires your cells to convert some of the chemical energy of goof into other forms of energy.
