Term

What are the two different types of orgranisms?

Definition

prokaryotes

&

eukaryotes

Term

What is a prokaryote?

Definition

A prokaryote is a prokaryotic cell

(it's a single-celled organism)

Prokaryotic cells are smaller than eukaryotic cells and are smaller and simpler, e.g. bacteria

Term

What is a eukaryote?

Definition

Eukaryotes are organisms that are made up of eukaryotic cells. Eukaryotic cells are complex and include all animal and plant cells.

Term

What are the different subcellular substances in an animal cell?

Definition

Nucleus, mitochondria, cytoplasm, cell membrane, ribosomes

Term

What are the different subcellular parts in a plant cell?

Definition
Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, ribosomes, mitochondria, cell wall, vacuole, chloroplasts
Term

What does the nucleus do in a cell?

Definition

Nucleus - contains genetic material that controls the activities of the cell

Term

What does the mitochondria do in a cell?

Definition

Mitochondria - these are where most of the reactions for aerobic respiration take place. Respiration transfers energy that the cell needs to work.

Term

What does the cytoplasm do in a cell?

Definition

Cytoplasm - gel-like substance where most of the chemical reactions take place. It contains enzymes that control these chemical reactions.
