Term
What are the three circulatory systems defined as?
Definition
1. Muscular pump: Heart
2. Fluid: Blood
3. Conduits: Blood vessels
Term
What makes up the cardiovascular system?
Definition
The heart, blood and vessels
Term
What is an open circulation system?
Definition
1. Extracellular fluid continuous with fluid in circulatory system.
2. Vessels empty fluid directly onto tissue
3. Extracellular fluid flows into circulatory system
Term
What is a closed circulatory system?
Definition
Continuous system of vessels
Term
What do all systems have in common?
Definition
1. Deliver nutrients to cells
2. Remove waste products
Term
Where are open circulatory systems found?
Definition
Arthropods and mullusks.
Term
Where are closed circulatory systems found?
Definition
Annelids
Term
How is blood flow conducted in a 2-chambered heart?
Definition
Atrium receives blood from the body.
Ventricle receives blood from the atrium and sends it to the gills
Blood from the gills collects in the aorta and is distributed throughout the body.
Term
How is blood flow conducted in a 3-chambered heart?
Definition
Ventricle pumps blood to the lungs and body. One atrium receives oxygenated blood from lungs, and a second receives from the body. The blood is then directed to the pulmonary circuit.
Term
How is the blood circulated through a 4-chambered heart?
Definition
Right atrium (deoxygenated from body), right ventricle, pulmonary valve and lungs, left atrium (oxygenated), left ventricle, aorta.
Term
Atrium
Definition
Receives blood from the body
Term
Ventricle
Definition
receives pumped blood from the atrium
Term
Aorta
Definition
distributes blood throughout the body
Term
Artery
Definition
Takes blood away from the heart
Term
Arteriole
Definition
Branches of the artery, into capillaries.
Term
Veins
Definition
transport blood throughout the body
Term
Venule
Definition
A small vein
Term
Hemacrit
Definition
made up of bone marrow stem cells and hemoglobin. the solid portion of blood
Term
Systolic
Definition
pressure needed to stop blood flow
Term
Diastolic
Definition
minimum pressure causing intermittent blood flow
Term
What is unique about red blood cells in mammals
Definition
There are no organelles.
Term
What does fibrin do?
Definition
End product of coagulation
Term
Platelets
Definition
Activated by collagen fibers, swell and release clotting factors to form a plug at wound site.
