NO UNREASONABLE SEARCHES: The police
need probable cause to
search your stuff or take
your things.

VALID WARRANT: the
police need a warrant
showing where they want
to search and what they
want to take. It must be
signed by a judge.

Definition
NO DOUBLE JEOPARDY:
Gov can’t put you on trial
again if they don’t like the verdict.

KEEP PRIVATE PROP.: Gov
can take your land if it’s for a
public use. Must pay a fair
price.

REMAIN SILENT: Don’t have
to testify to police or in court.

DUE PROCESS: Gov can’t
take your life, liberty, or property without a fair trial.

Definition
SPEEDY & PUBLIC TRIAL: You have the right to know the charges against you. The gov can’t keep you waiting--or hold your trial in secret.

IMPARTIAL JURY: You have the right to a fair jury.

WITNESS MUST TESTIFY: You have the right to question witnesses. They must testify.

REPRESENTATION: You have the right to a lawyer.

NON-CRIMINAL CASES: You have the right to a jury trial in civil cases (like lawsuits over money property.)

NO CRUEL & UNUSUAL
PUNISHMENT: The punishment must fit the
crime.

FINES: The bail or fine
must fit the crime.

-They do NOT have to accept appeals.

-They have the final say over what is CONSTITUTIONAL.
